Never seen a fluorescent lamp longer than 1500 mm. Tese 1800 mm tubes were probably limited to the UK and not used in most European countries.

I remember the 5ft versions of the grey end cromptons from porta cabin we had at the old high school back in the 80's... other thing I remember is how cold that cabin was in winter as the heaters were broken

What do you think, this lamp or the Osram 125 watt mercury vapor lamp? What are the pros and cons of both lamps?

I think for running that 55W PL-L lamp, a 58W T8 choke ballast might be a better option for running the lamp properly since it would be underpowered on a 36W T8 choke ballast, but an electronic ballast would be the best ballast to use for the 55W PL-L lamp since it was originally designed for use with electronic ballasts.

Hello Adam and Sparky-ww5re Please can you help me with what kind and spec of a ballast I need for these 125W E27 bulbs please? Very grateful for your time and advice.

I am amazed that the 40W PL-L lamp seems to run decently well on your 36/40W preheat ballast. I have often heard that these lamps have trouble running on 36/40W preheat ballasts.

I really like 4 pin non-integrated CFL lamps like these 36W PL-L lamps because I get to use external starters with them. Sadly, here in North America, we rarely use external starters with 4 pin CFL lamps since they are usually used either with electronic ballasts or magnetic rapid start ballasts, but using an external starter with them is still doable. I have a couple of videos where I have been operating some PL-L CFL lamps and other 4 pin non-integrated CFL lamps on preheat ballasts using external starters before.

Nice video, but you shouldn't run SOX lamps vertically, with the electrodes at the bottom, best the other way up or horizontal. The sodium can accumulate after cool down and then eats into them during next start up process.

Capacitor charge will be why it didn't blink when you turned it off and on again, leave it about 30 seconds off and it might blink again.

It's not A0.52. That symbol is a lambda. The following figure is the power factor (0.52 is pretty fecking awful by the way. The capacitor goes some way to improve it but it still won't be amazing).

Anyone that gets excited about a fluorescent light fitting really needs to get out more. Outdated, inefficient technology. The starter button is actually a starter switch. Don't call us, we'll call you.

Very nice! Here in the USA, I have not seen a fixture that takes that type of 4 pins (other than a battery operated lantern) and I do not see these for sale anywhere near me. I believe PL stands for Plug Light, but I am not sure about the extra L. I know the S probably stands for single.

I have the 400 watt version. BT37, E40 base but works fine in an E39 socket with pulse start metal halide ballast with ignitor disconnected. Puts off an insane amount of UV and gets incredibly hot. Basically any mercury vapor lamp can be made as a blacklight by using a woods glass envelope instead of a clear or phosphor coated glass, although they are only made in a few wattages, 125, 250 and 400 are the only sizes I could find online dispite extensive research. Were commonly used in nightclubs and similar large venues and bowling alleys before LED blacklights were available, and gradually replaced the mercury vapor since they add many advanced capabilities such as dimming, stroking, DMX control, and more. Still, the nature of mercury vapor makes for an efficient blacklight source.

Nice video and beautiful lamp! Moreover, if i'm not mistaken, the RA of this lamp is 82, so the color fidelity is also good. I personally love 2700 K or less and prefer only 2000, which my High Pressure Sodium lamps have. This light causes little light pollution and is very pleasant to the eyes.🙂
