There is a four-wheel-drive track going north off the Pieman Road about 1km east of the Pieman Rd bridge over the Wilson River. You can see the track on maps.thelist.tas.gov.au/ The track continues after it crosses the river. About 2km along after the river crossing it is taped where you make your way down to the river. From this point it is untracked.

Nice one Luke. A couple of questions if I may: any water on top and are there any tent spots up high?
@ChasingCheetahs
@ChasingCheetahs 2 ай бұрын
@Wello26 At 5:44 in the video you can see where I crossed a tree line going from the plains up the mountain. There was a creek here where I filled up with water on the way back down. I didn’t see any water at the top, but I’ve read elsewhere about a couple of tarns up there. There are also a few spots where it is flat and clear enough that you’d be able to pitch a tent. I think people continuing on to Stepped Hills usually camp in the valley on the other side where there is a creek between the two mountains.

@@matgordon-smith1949 It is a Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 4400. I have been using it since. The trip I struggled on was one where I had to carry water for the whole trip (about 7 liters). @ChasingCheetahs
@ChasingCheetahs 4 ай бұрын
@@ianbell5611 It is a Kokatat Hydrus dry suit. From memory the sizing was pretty spot on - I ordered it online. The only issue was the size I needed only had small socks, with no option for large. So I had to send it away to Victoria to get the socks replaced with larger ones after I bought it. The Hydrus material is significantly cheaper than the Gortex version, and I’ve been very happy with it.

No, the climb up to the range doesn't have any exposed parts or any scrambling. The initial section can get a bit tight in the tea tree, with a bit of scrub to push through, but otherwise it is just a steepish climb over low grass.

Fantastic effort! The treefall across the rapid looked very nasty indeed! If this trip occurred over the last few weeks then it would have coincided with my trip further upstream where I was doing non-packrafty things, amassing my own collection of miscalculations and also not accomplishing what I originally set out to achieve haha. I'm assuming the 5 day wait at Melaleuca was the recent cold front + strong winds weather warning? If so, it wouldn't have been any fun trying to do the SC track under those conditions!! How much did the Davey station volumetric flow rates come down (from 4000 GL/day) after a day and night of no rains? I was surprised at how quickly the Davey and its tributaries became fast flowing after just a couple of days of light rains.
@ChasingCheetahs
@ChasingCheetahs Жыл бұрын
Yes, this was in the last couple of weeks. We set out from Huon Campground on the 26th of Feb. A more detailed write-up of the trip can be found at www.chasingcheetahs.net/home/2023/3/12/miscalculating-the-crossing The weather front that came through at the end hit us on the last part of the walk to Melaleuca on Monday the 6th of March. There were a couple of groups who arrived at Melaleuca the day before to do the South Coast Track who ended up being turned back by the weather, as Louisa Creek and Louisa River had both risen to levels where they couldn’t safely be crossed. So not only would it have been shitty if we continued on, but we probably wouldn’t have gotten through. The gauge on the Davey had dropped to 1,563 Ml/day at midday on the day we set back out on the river after our lay day. The flow on the Crossing was probably less than this indicates, as the gauge is so far downstream. But I did see during the week we were at Melaleuca it rocketed up to a whopping 23,000 Ml/day during that storm!
