I watched a few videos, and so far I like them, but the premise of this video is kind of... disingenuous? Dungreed wasn't overlooked or underappreciated and "generally unloved" - literally where the hell do you get that from? Dungreed sold well and is very positive on Steam.
@BurningRangerVita

It's also just "a dungeon crawling rogue like with pixel graphics indie game" in a time where three of those come out every week. It's simply an oversaturated market where you just don't get much of any traction, unless you have at least one uniquely creative factor or go unexpectedly viral on the back of a content creator's persona (aka what they're doing WITH the game or WHILE playing it, rather then the game ITSELF) more then then because of the game's merits. First time i'm seeing a video from this person (probably because i just watched the most recent few wickedwiz ones) just because autoplay and this is not how you break into the "video essay rant about video games" space as a small creator because it's too contrived and about a niche title in a PACKED market.
@Pocket-Monster-Zep
@Pocket-Monster-Zep 18 күн бұрын
I don't think I'm being disingenuous. I'm just coming from my perspective, maybe you were on Dungreed from day one and so to you, my feelings are a bit silly. I came to the Dungreed party late and was like "why didn't anyone tell me about this sooner?". Even as an active member of the roguelike community, this didn't land on my radar for a long time and I took a look around the KZbin landscape and didn't see it getting the love I felt it deserved so was inspired to make this. Is that so bad?
@Pocket-Monster-Zep
@Pocket-Monster-Zep 18 күн бұрын
I did highlight a couple of mechanics that I especially appreciated. I'm not interested in games that "go viral", I'm far more interested in what makes them tick. And I'm not here to rant. Honestly my aim is to generally talk about videogames positively as that's just who I am. And if elements of a videogame spark my interest, I'll talk about it. I get that elements of Dungreed are relatively generic but I think it has some really interesting gameplay variety and mechanics as well.
@Pluto-xj9
@Pluto-xj9 18 күн бұрын
@@Pocket-Monster-Zep Is that so bad? Your statement here does not align with what is being said in the video/ what the premise is. Let's make it clear to you again, you literally said, Dungreed is "generally unloved", underappreciated and overlooked. These are pretty strong statements you can't back up if being pressed. Dungreed is an niche indie game and for that it did pretty well - look at the numbers. And it's disingenuous, because YOU overlooking the game does not make the game "generally unloved" nor underappreciated. Instead of acknowledging your failure you shift the blame to everyone else, to the consumer/community. Don't get me wrong, I don't think your are doing this intentionally or with malice, but this is how it might come across if you can't back up those claims in your intro. Anyway. You literally could take your statement here, put it as your intro and you would have a way better premise. You overlooked it, and you want to give the game more exposure, because it's a good game/ you like it very much.

Right now I played more than 30 hours on the game and I have to say that I don't agree on different points. Of course I agree about performance issues, it's something to be addressed (and devs are working on it). The new biome introduced this monday introduced a lot of interesting new traps and a first version of progression system (that has to grow, for sure). I think that currently you can do quitr a lot and different builds with medallions allow you to have fun runs. And the system is designed so that you have to learn where is the best position for a medallion, but not giving you the certainty to unlock it's full potential. Also in the binding of isaac if you have a bad run, you cannot so too much. All the system is growing, new content is released every week, devs are super opened to suggestions. I think that it's already a good choice 💪 Last side note, Evil Empire are not the creator of Dead Cells, they developed some DLCs. Good and interesting analysis though! 👍
@Pocket-Monster-Zep

The build from this video will be quickly outpaced by updates. It is the curse of trying to critically review any game these days as it's really a snapshot of when you get your hands on it and won't be entirely reflective of where the game may end up. I'm glad the devs are addressing the game's issues and hope that it grows into something truly fun. as I said in the video, I'll revisit it after a good number of updates and see how it shakes out but I do feel the medallion system needs the most work to improve the fun factor. Thanks, I have been trying to figure out how two devs can both say "from the creators of dead cells" and did look into it but didn't find that distinction. So really Evil Empire should maybe reconsider their branding around their Dead Cells accolade 😅 Thank you, I think due to how review videos age so poorly in the early access area, I am looking for new ways to deploy my analysis 😁

I love the idea of this game, and I even like just how much it feels like Dead Cells, in a good way. But I own a lot of roguelike games, and I kept getting this creeping, crawling feeling that my time would be better spent elsewhere while they work on it and I should reach for the steam refund button before I leave the game running and go over the 2 hr mark. This is just TOO early. There isn't a real need to ever engage with any of the random elements... at all. The weapons are a bit different from each other, but the difference won't really matter that often. The damage values and abilities attached to weapons, same thing. Going from 100 damage to 115... just doesn't seem to matter. My deaths in the first hour came from either the controller stopped working because a speaker made my mouse move with a tiny vibration (!??), or doing a platforming challenge that made me lose 600 hp because I screwed up a wall run 15 seconds prior and bumped into 6 different spiked/spinning things before I got back to safety. You will receive like 15 different chances to change your weapon before the damage values creep up into less hits for a kill. Really strange feeling variety in runs out of what you are putting on your character Melee combat feels good, but as soon as 3 enemies are standing on top of each other, you are just guessing if you should be swinging or trying to dodge or stun. You can't see what is going on in combat when they stack on top of each other like this. It made me want to go play Dead Cells or the Lost Crown. That's not entirely a bad thing, but apart from the random layouts and the run based kind of nature, I ask why is this so roguelike in the bad ways? I buy a new roguelike way more often than I finish one, and some of them just have HUGE expectations of how many runs/time you will put into it for completion or unlocks. The current state of the game is too short and not full of enough content for more than like 5 hours of play. I'm sure the devs have Ubisoft breathing down their neck, but even the official trailer came out unlisted on youtube. This game feels like it was possibly even teetering on being cancelled but the success of Lost Crown has given it some kind of boost to see it done or put out earlier than it should have been. I don't mean to disparage the devs, but $20 can get you a whole lot more game and a whole lot more fun elsewhere. Early access is a good place for this game, but it needed a few more months for a good initial first impression. I personally hit refund after 45 min, reclaiming the hour fifteen left for something better. It's not a failure, but someone over there needs to start asking hard questions of what should be included in the rougelike formula, what things don't need to be there, etc. Every thing I picked up felt worthless towards getting a longer run, barely anything was more fun than the last thing I used. I'd gladly sacrifice some visual identity for a little more oomph with the augments/upgrades you pick up.
@Pocket-Monster-Zep
@Pocket-Monster-Zep Ай бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts MegaJackolope, not too far away from my own. There is a fair amount that needs looked at and worked on before this game is worth the asking price. As you say, within the Roguelike space, 20 bucks gets you a long way. That's like 4 full price Death Must Dies. I think the lack of impact from upgrades and augments is the biggest issue that leaves runs feeling a little hollow. I'm actually working on a video atm looking at some demos from the Steam Next Fest and have a game in there which nails the concept that they were going for with augments enhancing other augments. Keep an eye out for that this week. Hopefully I revisit Rogue Prince down the line and find it in a better place than where I've left it :D

I love the video, thank you! I've put in 72-ish hours into Hades II and have a full 30 cards in my arcana, with my go-to cards at max level. I have to say, gathering the resources for upgrading everything honestly didn't feel like a chore and if anything, I really appreciated that I was heading into runs with a solid goal in mind compared to just wanting to get to the final boss and beat them (though of course that also comprised a bulk of my run goals!) I'm happy with the blend of the old gameplay system and new elements, I remember during the first game I had moments where I wished I could interact a bit more with the environments and they gave us that with the resources. It's a solid early access for me, and there's so much to love and to anticipate. Definitely a bigger world and more at stake for the story, and they did it so well with the incorporation of Hades elements to give old players that nostalgia when you run into old characters. As a lover of Greek mythology, it was amazing seeing even more characters and stories come to life - I even cried at some points lol. Overall, I have never been happier with a sequel and I can't wait for V1. P.S. For my first two hundred hours of the first Hades, my favorite boon was the Athena dash but the last hundreds of hours I found myself leaning towards Ares on either attack or special (depending on the weapon) for that sweet doom-stacking damage. I've been looking for an equivalent here but I guess no two gods are equal. Hestia comes close though.

In my opinion the combat might be a bit less frenetic but even that can be seen as a good thing, cause the game feels harder than the first one. For me, the one major issue I have with the game is the power scaling within each run - in the 4th underworld biome, enemies are pretty tanky - I've more than once been in a position of having the last enemy in a wave stunlocked for 20+ swings of a weapon in order to finish them off. And the damage from hits taken scales up pretty fast too - as early as the second biome you're in a position where taking a single hit in the first room can inflict more damage than your passive regen can heal before you reach the boss.
@Pocket-Monster-Zep
@Pocket-Monster-Zep Ай бұрын
It tough. Once you're in that biome and you can feel your hits just aren't going to cut it against Chronos, it can feel disheartening haha. I would definitely recommend the Scythe, I get pretty consistent results using it and it was my first win on both runs.

What I enjoyed the most in Hades I was how balanced each weapon was, so that if you choose the right combination of boons and adopt the right playstyle, most builds have the potential to be very powerful. This was especially the case in the mid to late game where you gained many mechanics to control your build. Did you feel this was the case in Hades II, or do you think Supergiant needs more time to balance the weapons? A common complaint I've heard is that the weapons and comparative lack of boon doors leaves players getting weak builds.
@Pocket-Monster-Zep
@Pocket-Monster-Zep 2 ай бұрын
I think weapons aren't as balanced in Hades 2 as in Hades 1, atleast not at this point. Part of this that the weapons and aspects can have far more mechanical complexity which is harder to get value out of than something like the aspect of Thanatos on the scythe. The reduction in boons does add to this. You can increase the boon options with tarot cards (though while still at mercy to some RNG). I'd expect some tweaks and adjustments in coming months. There's a spot for a whole new weapon, a new aspect per weapon and I wouldn't be surprised if they add more gods and they made adjustments to resources Vs boon rooms. I think players have a valid complaint but the difference to bear in mind is that we're looking at EA + 1 Vs EA + 365 days + updates. Comes down to if you have faith is SG as a dev to get all the wrinkles ironed out and I think this process is in solid hands. Geesh, I hope you wanted a ramble with your chicken noodles 😂

Check rooms thoroughly in the city and don't miss side rooms as it can spawn in there too (once you break the pillar, doors sometimes open to other rooms). Check these locations carefully and then get to the Cyclops fight, mine that room and die and repeat. You might just be getting unlucky. Do the above enough and you'll outdo any bad luck. Choosing a tool just greatly increases chances of that particular resource spawning, and gives you bonuses when gathering it. hera's magick restoration boon is my favorite of her's. that boon is so busted. it is so broken that if you have say 12 magick and go for a 20 magick attack, it won't even takr the 8 remaining magick off of your new restored magick bar try born gain if you haven't. it is disgostang

Great video! I’m really into Greek mythology and I’m pretty sure they made the fields of mourning vast and relatively bare intentionally to invoke that feeling of uncertainty and impatience. For me it’s the area in the game I want to get out of the fastest but I tend to get a bit lost or sidetracked in the big area which can be frustrating for sure but I think it’s a cool way to reflect the vibe or aura of the actual inspiration for the location from Greek mythology. I might be overthinking it but in both Hades games I’ve noticed a lot of care goes into the feeling/ambiance of each different location based on that locations origin so I imagine that’s what they were going for with the fields. Anyway I enjoyed the video, keep it up!

Thank you Citizen. The Intro is 100% accurate. Dungreed has been solidly in my rotation. It's so good. Saw it on another KZbinrs video (can't remember who) and was like "wait a minute, what is THAT".

The resource management is a big focus it seems, theyve changed it already so that you can get anything you stumble upon but the utility item just makes a category more common

That's a nice change. I did notice yesterday that I was picking up things I thought I didn't have the tool for but convinced myself I was misremembering haha. Well that's my main peeve gone, can't complain about much now 😁

The best boon from the first game was far and away Athena’s dodge boon reflected incoming projectiles. That thing is a godsend (pun intended) and is so incredibly useful due to the sheer number of projectile attacks you get faced with. It’s especially useful against the three witches mini boss in Asphodel who cover the screen in attacks as you can send those attacks right back at them.

How did I forget the Athena dash? So often you'd take her keepsake first thing and use half your rerolls to guarantee the dash for a good run haha. Good pick

Ooft sorry to hear that pal. If it's a visual issue maybe update your drivers etc. at low it's not too demanding so you should be able to run it most likely (unless you're trying to play it on a Commodore 64)

@@Ian-hz8flsend them a bug report! nearly all of the changes in the last patch were from players sending in recommendations and such so they *are* listening. out of like 85 hours on my steam deck i have experienced one crash and it was totally random. my game was still saved too so i didn't even lose a run definitely too good of a game to miss out on. might i ask what you are playing on?

Honestly, I wouldn't wait. From what I can tell at about 40 hours in is that we're missing one area/potentially one boss fight and the hidden weapon aspects. The version out atm is 0.9 something. The early game will remain, I reckon, mostly the same at release. But I understand the choice too, I considered it and I just couldn't haha
