6013 is basically sheet metal rod because it does not penetrate. Try 6010 dc rod or 6011 ac rod all around most versatile mild steel rods that penetrate you will never go back. No reason to fight with a welding rod that doesn’t penetrate and traps slag.

How much did this cost overall and what is the top speed?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
It's been a little while, but I think it was $800-$900 and I'd say it goes around 35 MPH. A big part of that cost was the special aluminum wheels, which were completely unnecessary, but I just thought they looked so cool that I had to buy them. Hitting a higher speed is just a matter of changing the sprocket or adjusting the torque converter. Speed is the easy part, handling is harder. This one was really made to look a certain way, though.

You have that backward, voltage is not what is dangerous, it is amperage that matters. Hence why a Tesla coil is safe. It’s high voltage, low amperage.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
Why can I touch the posts of a 12 volt car battery that's capable of delivering 800 amps and be fine? It's because the actual amperage that flows is a function of voltage. Ohms law states V=IR. Because the resistance through a person is relatively fixed, the voltage controls how many amps will flow. Therefore, by limiting voltage, you also limit current and create a safe condition. So yes, like I said in the video, the amperage is what hurts you, but controlling voltage is what matters to stay safe. In the case of a Tesla coil, the reason that it does not affect the human system is because of the very high frequency range of the Alternating current produced by the circuit. While welding is done using either DC or relatively low frequency AC (under 400 Hz), Tesla coils operate at frequencies over 100 kHz, which frequencies of electricity do not affect the nervous system or cause muscle contraction in the same way that lower frequency AC or DC current does.

What is the difference between these an the Evolution orange one?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
The orange one is a multi-material saw and is built with cost in mind. The vise doesn't have a quick release nut, so you have to turn it all the way out and in unlike the blue saws with a nut that allows you to slide the vise jaw up to the material quickly. The clamp on the orange one is fabricated from sheet metal rather than heavy cast material that is on the blue saw. The orange saw requires the Allen wrench to adjust the fence angle, where the blue saw has a built in handle. The blade is a multi-material universal blade rather than a dedicated steel cutting blade. Other than that, I believe it's similar to the S355CPSL. I'm sure it'll work good, but the features on the dedicated metal cutting chop saws do a lot to save time.

I can't seem to weld 16-14 gauge metal without burning through even on the lowest settings ( Letter and number dials) . I'm using the 035 wire the machine came with. Will switching to 030 wire help?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
Yes, switching to .030 wire will reduce the amperage and help avoid burning through.

Thank you for the nice video. I'm thinking of buying your course but I'm a bit lazy, is everything metric-compatible in the course or, do I have to use my brain? (e.g. Amps/thou is not a useful unit on my bank of the pond) I suggest you copy your answer in the course blurb too :)
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
Thanks! I have metric units in the courses, but the units aren't really the main point. I teach based on principles so that you can figure out the quantities yourself. If you try them and find that it's not the right fit for you, just send me an email and I'll refund the cost, no hard feelings.

I have used almost all CAD software you mentionned, except free version of Solidedge. Talking about Fusion360, as you mentioned that drawing export is limited. In fact, it is not limited. Unfortunately, it's more than limited. You cannot export a drawing you created in Fusion360. The only option you have is Screenshot.

Problem is that people use pulse on everything its really only beneficial for outta position or if heat input is a issue axil spray gets better penetration than pulse
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
True story, unless you're working on thin stuff or out of position, spray is generally better. As more of a fabricator than a production welder, I do it just because it's too much time to switch material.

Is it true that if I change the stick from negative to positive I'll get a different kind of weld?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
With stick welding, you'll generally get less penetration with DC electrode negative, which can be useful on very thin material. I use DC electrode positive 99% of the time.

Thanks for the video, I have noticed a little problem 03:28 the clamping is pushing the part due to the 90 degree pliers clamping. I think a 1/4” cover plate underneath the round table would work better and the use of a “C”clamp or a regular pliers. The use of 180 degrees clamping should maintain the part to be drilled in place.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
I agree that would be more accurate. I never thought of a cover plate for the bottom, that's a great idea.

I'm in Europe, so thank you for the metric. Took all your advices, some other content creators and real life people and bought a MMA/MIG/MAG 180A machine. Started welding today dispite investigating the matter for the three months prior. In my machine you can choose amperage, voltage and wire speed. So, you need to setup all of them, nothing is tied automatically to each other. I guess it's better that way for experienced users but a bit more difficult to get the hang of it for a begginer. The machine does not have a parameter chart and everything I find in significant detail is in inches 😢

As a guy relatively new to welding, I have heard "If there's slag, you drag". Here, in the vertical up motion, you are pushing. I am a bit confused. A little help here coach?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 10 сағат бұрын
That's generally true. With vertical welds, gravity will pull the slag downward and you can prevent the molten metal from falling out by using a slight upward angle. The best way to get a feel for it is to try it both ways on some scrap and see what you think.

Enjoyed the basics tim got a serious question for you i got this jon-boat that has the intake valve n hose for live-well right dead center on bottom of boat. Its about an 1 3/4 hole dont really want a hole in middle bottom of boat in case the valve fails so i want to fill exsisting hole and relocate to the mid-back.which should i do for best results just weld round n round till hole is filled completly or would be best to cut a proper thickness plate plug and weld that into hole.i believe the plug n weld is better chance of no leaks easpally since iam new to tig welding.thanks fer vids n input?snooky pa.😊😊😊😊

Great question! I would cut a piece of material larger than the hole, lay it on the bottom side of the boat over the hole, then weld all the way around it, assuming that the raised area won't cause any problems with the way the boat works. You could cut a piece to fit right in the hole if you need it to sit flush.

Hi. I love your videos. Thanks. I’m new to welding. I have a DECO stick welder and I need to weld 1/4” hot rolled steel together. I have one sheet that’s 3’ x 7” and two pieces that are 3’ x 1”. These pieces will be welded on either side of the wider piece, flat face to flat face to give it more rigidity. What stick and amperage do you recommend? Push or pull? I’ll clean them completely, and chamfer the edges beforehand. But I’m worried about messing up. It’s not critical. Just a platform for an extended bed on a 1014 Jet wood lathe. Thanks for your help. Idk if he mentioned it, but with self-shielded FCAW, the electric current is ran as DC electrode negative (straight polarity), meaning you want your ground wire on the positive terminal and your electrode on the negative terminal. If you don't do this, you'll have a terrible time and your welds will be absolute trash.
