I have to respectfully take offense to the use of the word "kidnapped" to describe the taking of prisoners of war by the British Army. This was a practice followed by BOTH sides, during both the War of 1812 and the earlier Revolutionary War, and is in keeping with the military standards and conventions not only of that time, but still practiced today. American forces did the same to British troops captured at a large number of battles throughout the conflict. To misrepresent this as criminal is a disservice to historical accuracy, and is unbecoming an NPS employee. It is highly unfortunate that many POWs did not survive their captivity, but that again was common to BOTH sides, as POW camps in both nations tended to be ill-equipped, overcrowded, and unsanitary, giving rise to rampant outbreaks of disease in an era where the cures still eluded our technologies. As a Canadian historical re-enactor, I have repeatedly attended and participated in the annual anniversary ceremonies at River Raisin National Battlefield, honouring the memories of those who fell on on BOTH sides of that terrible battle. Today, our two nations, as well as the United Kingdom, are close friends and allies, and such demonization and misrepresentation should be not only be discouraged overall, but absolutely disallowed by any federal government representative in the course of their duties. Such comments are inflammatory and untruthful; in modern terminology "disinformation". I would expect better from the NPS. Such conversation could easily give rise to discussion of the "kidnapping" of Native American, Mexican, Phillipino, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Iranian, or Afghani citizens by the US military in the time elapsed since America's conflicts with Britain... and would be equally inaccurate and unjust. Let's do better.

Cool video i had two great grandfathers who served at Frenchtown. My 5th gg William W. Tucker from Adair KY, 1st rifle regiment John Simpson, under command of John Allen. My 4th gg Moses Tucker 17th infantry. Wayne county records gathered from Morehead State University claims Moses was among the few who surrendered and escaped the massacre. The book claims Moses made friends with a "half-breed" indian and when they were captured the indian told my gg that he disliked the idea of sleeping with their shoes off because he believed they wouldn't be treated kindly by Procter. They escaped the massacre and the indian led Moses by starlight 18 nights to army headquarters. After which they both returned to Wayne county ky to live out their lives.

I appreciate the facts shared as well as the beautiful scenery! Some tips... Don't climb the the dunes unless you're in very good shape. If you have to be rescued the coast guard charges $3,000! Fish Town is one of the oldest wards in America. Define place to go! The best time to visit the dunes is in August because there are less people and Lake Michigan is the warmest.

Thank you for watching Paul! The National Park System (see wiki - List of the United States National Park System official units) has 423 National Park UNITS - some are called National Parks (63 of them), some are called National Monuments (84 of them - one is the subject of this video), some are called National Historic Parks (61 of them), some are called National Memorials (31 of them) etc. The vast majority of the 423 units have a park ranger, maps, pamphlets, stamps, orientation film, historic artifacts, junior ranger program, etc My husband and I have been to all 423 as of this year (took 6 years) and received the Platinum award (highest level) this year from the National Parks Travelers Club (NPTC) data base and, as we add stamps, their computer system keeps tabs of where and when we visited each park. I have pasted the following info from Wiki: "The Official Units of the National Park System of the United States is the collection of physical properties owned or administered by the National Park Service. As of December 2020, there are 423 official units of the National Park System; however, this number can be misleading. For example, Denali National Park and Preserve are counted as two units, since the same name applies to a national park and an adjacent national preserve. Yet Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is counted as one unit, despite its double designation. Counting methodology is rooted in the language of a park's enabling legislation. Furthermore, the NPS contributes resources to "affiliated areas" which do not fall under its administration, and these do not count toward the official list number (of 423). An example is Oklahoma City National Memorial. These units are a subset of the areas in the United States National Park System, and nearly all participate in the national park passport stamps program. National Park System units are found in all 50 states, in the District of Columbia, and in the U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. (The territory of the Northern Mariana Islands has an affiliated area but not an official NPS unit.)" I prefer to call all 423 as "National Parks" because the name does not refer to the quality, value, size or importance of each of the 423 units. It is solely a legislative label.
