This show does so much right, from its grey and realistic depiction of police and criminals down to its depiction of race and LGBTQ. This show does LGBTQ characters right. It doesnt make a message or shove it down your throat or have shallow characters included because the people at the top said so. Kima and Omar are both queer characters that are beloved by fans and critics alike. Because they have actual character to them. They have traits and flaws and soul. Being gay is just something they happen to be. The best portrayal is Rawls. No one even knows he is gay and it has zero bearing on his character or repercussions. Hes not some twinkle fairy type flamboyantly gay. Hes a hard as nails CO and major the men fear. He kicks ass and takes names and you would never guess he likes to have sex with men. Thats like real life. Being gay or LGBT is not an identity, its just something about you as a person. But it doesnt determine who you are and what you're about just as a straight guy who likes redheads isn't defined by that or a woman who likes tall guys in uniform, etc. This show is how you do things. It's reality (for the most part) and it also shows why in the world most stuff cannot get done due to the sheer volume of red tape and shit rolling downhill.
