With this type we are restricted with the size (length) of the harakeke so might not be long enough for that. But you could use the Wahakura Video (also here on our channel) and downsize that one for a cat basket. That one takes more preparation and has 3 whiri

Thank you !.. It is another thing again all the different varieties, even though they appear to be excellent for weaving, the subtlties of location etc all do make a difference, as yes, does yearly maintainence. I have known several bushes that have thrived even more so over the years with regular cuttings, and insects depleted, maybe birds get a clearer veiw to clean them.
@Flaxworx2 ай бұрын
yes indeed! I was told to harvest so a bird can fly through (meaning, a bird can get in and kill insects that may harm the bush)... thee is so much more to this than just cutting...thank you!

How many stripes do I have to add
@Flaxworx2 ай бұрын
Kia Ora, that depends on each person's preference and how wide they want the brim to be. There is no set number and I never count them sorry.

Whats it used for?
@Flaxworx2 ай бұрын
Its used as a frame (temorary holder) to make small tukutuku panels. Its more of a learning frame than the full size version one would have to make for a Marae decoration for instance.

Kumihimo?
@Flaxworx2 ай бұрын
no that is different - kamihimo is the weaving with paper strips/cord that are glued together to form wider strips, kumihimo is the plaiting (or making braids and cords). Slightly different material and techniques.

Does the harakeke have to be straightened with a blunt object first or can it go straight into the pot after splitting? Ive been following your page for a while and have been wondering if it mattered
@Flaxworx2 ай бұрын
Kia Ora, you mean softened? Yes and No - some people hapine before boiling and others after. It is really a personal preference, but most will soften (hapine) the whenu before boiling as they are pressed for time and also they fit easier in the pot that way. The softening after boiling is a tad more complex as one needs to be very careful that they do not curl up when drying as then it will be too late to hapine. So, for most weavers, it is easier to do it before boiling.

Just taking a moment in between weaving handles to watch this ! Thank you.. your videos are always great to watch. Love the mix of natural colours. A friend cut down a whole flax bush..and instead of it going to compost. .I've processed it into a few large green woven kete and enough blanched for dying a few others.. but I have now experimented with the lower hard end of the leaves, which while discarded for compost..took on a natural pink colouration as they started decaying... but rough and tough as they are to weave I've perseverred ..and have woven a large strong open weave kete..now finishing handles.

Hi, whats the best dye to use for harakeke putiputi? That is durable to withstand all weather types. As I've a mission to put together a few bouquets to place on my mum and brothers grave.. the thing is, this is all new to me I've no idea of what dyes to get..!? Yet I've learnt all i need to know right here. I didnt quite catch the names of the dyes I just need to know which exact dyes to get& if i need more than 1type for the whole process.. please and thankyou ❤
@Flaxworx3 ай бұрын
"how long is a piece of string?" - there is no such thing as the best dye... each brand has different advantages and disadvantages and also each brand has a number of colours that work best or less so. If you really want to know more about putiputi dyeing, I recommend looking up Flax And Fibre Flax Florestry courses with Heather Carrigan. She is the master of all things putiputi and has a segment on Dyeing as well. Apart from that - the actual dyes are for sale in our online shop (or Spotlight) - www.flaxworx.co.nz

what does adding salt to the dying process do koa?
@Flaxworx3 ай бұрын
This is the video on boiling and we only put a bit of dishwashing liquid in as we were told by our kaiako that it helps with the bleaching of the harakeke when it dries. I think back in the day when there were not many dyes people would dye their clothes and put salt with those but I don't think it makes a difference any way with dyeing harakeke and we certainly never used it for any brand of dye we use.
