I feel as if Brian is sort of showing off here. With good reason. It’s the equivalent of something like Orson Welles dramatising and filming a nursery rhyme in between shooting scenes of Citizen Kane.

Absolutely amazing. I was 2 months young when this was recorded.....I grew up listening to The Beach Boys, but still after all of this time, still something new to learn. Thank you for this post.

Brian was barely 23 here. That man was on a level of genius no one else has come close to.

Brian had so much confidence in his abilities that he had no problem telling these amazing musicians, who were much older than him, what to play. And they recognized his genius! He wasn’t a dictator, he just considered them all as equals. And that bass line in the second half!! I swear Phil Lesh heard that and incorporated that approach, ie, don’t play the root note 😁 Truly a monumental bass part. And as much as I love Carol Kaye, I think Brian told her exactly what to play

The thing that I believe now, however unbelievable, is that the superstars really hear the finished product precisely as it will be, in their heads before production has even begun. I think Lennon and McCartney had that gift and chance brought them together. Brian Wilson was on that level.

As someone said of Charles Kuralt, “the things he says (or the changes Brian makes) are obvious………only after he points them out or changes them.” It sounded awesome to me and he stops the flutes 5 seconds into the video.

Sure I'm 74 now. But I was a kid once . I was in hi skool when the Beach Boys came on my little hand held transistor radio first time with surfing USA. I still have that radio and it works. I'm crazy for these you tube videos of them, so young, such harmony. Those Beetles came along and I had no use for them. I bin loyal to the Beach Boys to this very day. No dementia yet. I will hum Sloop John B as they shove me head first into the crematorium and my ashes will hum "Adios" to my headstone until the end of eternity.
