Hi Dan. Great technique and video. Thanks for sharing. What type of stain is the Japan black? Is it oil based or something else? I didn’t think you could thin oil based with alcohol. It would be great to know what stain it is. I’m in the US. Thanks again.
@dans_stuff19 күн бұрын
@@jimrohman6575 hi Jim, this stain is spirit based, so would thin for this modelling purpose with mineral spirits or IPA (IPA is always on my modelling bench which is why it’s common for me to use for applications such as this).

The softer Balsa gives a older, worn, rotted look at the end of the pieces of timber. Handy for those modeling damper climates or very old exposed timbers. Now have a reason to buy pastels. Looks easier than dry brushing.
@dans_stuff8 ай бұрын
I’ve used balsa as a cheap timber option for many years. Easy to trim down to required size, and great for bulk decking etc. Very easy to twist balsa boards and pull apart for modelling broken pieces of timber. The coffee stirrers are also good for decks or platforms, but a bit more limiting with the size since they are much harder to cut.

Without question one of the more well presented, configured, and created layouts of all time. I’m building a like historically accurate logging layout and this gives me inspiration for sure. Exceptional in all forms. Thank you for posting this.

Transcends craft & enters art for sure. Exquisitely beautiful & realistic looking modeling - but realism is spoiled by herky-jerky camera. Remember that every tiny movement is magnified by the scale of the art - and get a tripod!

Great craftsmanship! Could you elaborate on how you created your tree trunks? The bark is incredible.

Hello Dan. This is a beautiful layout. I am interested to know where you got the name Kinmont from? Beautiful trains.
@dans_stuff2 жыл бұрын
Kinmont’s name is drawn from a couple of stopping points along the former Beech Forest (“The Beechy”) line, Kincaid and Dimnont. Rather than name it after a prototypical location and thus be more obligated to run prototypical trains, I used the influences of this area to guide the proto-freelance running.

@@dans_stuff Thanks for replying. I was interested because it sounds close to my real name, which is rare.

I also make my own trees, but I like real big but to scale trees, on my layout my biggest tree is 70'' tall or around 150 feet. I use carved dolls with asparagus fern branches I get from Hobby Lobby. I seen you had so many wasn't sure where you got them all. You have a lot of time in trees . Your scenery and layout is awesome for sure, thx
@muss19515 жыл бұрын
super nice, hey did you make all of your trees or are the factory made
@dans_stuff5 жыл бұрын
ub railroad al anza - all the trees are handmade, mostly using twisted wire and rope pines. A few of the bigger feature trees are carved balsa trunks with dried status flower heads used for tree limbs. All the ground foam on the trees is handmade as well as there was too much expense in using commercial product in this volume.

Wilmer sent me! Is that the whole layout? Simple but effective! RH
@dans_stuff5 жыл бұрын
CONTAINERMAN68 it’s just a small cameo scene, about 4’ wide. It presents as larger due to the side wings that have information panels about the layout and the prototype. The rest of the hidden sections is return loop and staging yard. It’s designed as a smaller portable sample of my bigger home layout.
