Highly dubious claims from a guy shilling for a company that is pretty much the only game in town at the moment for AI acceleration on a large scale. That’s UK employment which will enable cheaper renewable energy to come on the grid. It’s actually a net reduction in energy bill costs. Not sure you understand the scale of energy sector or overall cost saving this will bring. Also UK jobs are good for growth.

@stevecampkin8613Ай бұрын
We need to get to net zero ASAP, but then we need to get to Carbon Negative, and this can only be done through energy consumption reduction and carbon sequestration. We need more trees, more small scale regenerative farms and a lot more soil building. Any project has to give us 10% BNG but this is bare minimum! The transition to green energy is also a massive opportunity for democratisation of energy to lower bills, provide grid resilience and national security. We should be encouraging and funding solar panels on every roof and car park. Solar farms and wind farms should only be used to make up any shortfall, they must not be the foundation of UK energy production.

@@danielburges8176 wonder how much that cost to come up with
@iareid8255Ай бұрын
A huge folly, and not only a folly but an expensive one for all. We cannot transition from conventional generation to the second and third rate generation that is wind and solar. The sources of generation are so wide spread that an extensive expansion of conductors is required to connect them all. This expansion has to be sized for maximum load but as renewable generation is so sporadic that the average load will be a small fraction of that maximum. This makes the cost against the utilisation factor a large one and hence expensive for the return. The major folly is thinking we can power our electrical system with renewables, intermittency apart, which in itself is unsurmountable, wind and solar have an uncontrollable output feeding a system that needs minute control second by second. Also they lack inertia, reactive power and short circuit current inputs, all basic requirements for a stable grid. It is not the National Grid's fault but technically illiterate politicians and civil servants who have accepted the advice from those who do not have our best and basic requirements in mind. Not that CO2 reduction will make the slightest difference to climate now (That lie has gone on long enough), but nuclear generation is the only available source we can use that emits no CO2 in generation and will outlast these follies by a significant amount, require no real grid expansion and are reliable and ultimately far more cost effective.
@chrisking7603Ай бұрын
Grid upgrades are necessary anyway. Electrification of industrial heat, replacing gas, will require a lot more capacity.
@iareid8255Ай бұрын
Chris, the main part of the grid is carrying less load now than it did 20 years ago. This expansion is for wind being genertaed in remote areas. Building new conventional plants can be done using the sites of decommisioned stations so minimal grid upgrades being required.
@chrisking7603Ай бұрын
@@iareid8255 Just look a bit further forward than this moment. Decentralisation of generation does indeed allow for less carrying capacity to local consumers, and consequently significantly less line losses. Nevertheless, if there's still sufficient capacity from existing generation sites *now*, by the time the gas distribution infrastructure is carrying less chemical energy (for example), their consumers' wires will have to carry much more energy. If that's to generate heat for homes' and business' water and rooms, that could be a doubling of consumption. Industrial processes currently generating heat for a myriad of reasons using fossils would require a step upgrade too. It's naive to think even with the advantages of distributed generation (especially co-generation), that existing generation sites' distribution infrastructure will be sufficient.
@iareid8255Ай бұрын
Chris, it would be if you scrap renewables, which will happen with time anyway. It is not a good idea to electrcify heating and transport, it is not effective or efficient. The more we electrify such areas the more gas is required at teh power staions for teh extra demand. Despite building more renewables, output has been flat for the last three years, as their performance deteriorates with time. and new build is slow. The grid cannot transition to just renewables, some nuclear and interconnectors. its not technically possible. We have lots of gas in the U>K. but gov ernments won't exploit that resource, yet complain about expensive foreign gas. Possibly they are so locked into renewables, they don't want the competition? That can only end in tears.
@chrisking760322 күн бұрын
@@iareid8255 Was it ever unclear that transitioning away from fossil-based energy was going to be impactful? You would need them to install a two way inverter on the cars. Plenty do now have V2L though already. Nissan leafs and chademo cars can already to V2G. CCS can't do that yet. And the charger that works with the leaf is about 4k I think.
@chrisking7603Ай бұрын
@@Lewis_StandingProper V2G can bypass the AC parts of a vehicle. The DC protocols are much more flexible, and of course can happily carry more than 32 amps. Projects to do this (in Oz) are standardising on a common technology which means all existing CCS2 vehicles should only require a software upgrade to participate.

Meh. The "clean" energy thing is like PPE/diesel all over again - people trying to maximise their cash from whatever they're invested in. The UK's electricity grid is our *accessory* energy grid for good reason - we don't have any way of easily producing renewable (Climate Change needs renewable, not 'clean') electricity on demand. We're not a country with big, easy-to-control hydro like Norway. We must retain and develop our much more powerful primary energy grid - gas - and ramp up the proportion of non-fossil gas that's in it. That needs massive electricity connections to go from our offshore wind (our biggest by far potential) to onshore e-NG synthesis plant.

Well, again, the current storm has knocked out huge areas of the grid. I don't know how this is going for you ladies, but we have 0 power for 26hrs now. Maybe you should concentrate your efforts on making the infrastructure actually work during wind before stretching to the environment. You have a 3rd world infrastructure as soon as it's breezy.. But its fine, do a podcast, have a zoom meeting, im sure that will help. You could ask the government for a piece of the carbon capture technology scam pie? That might assist in keeping the lights on during a windy day.
@ljmars3787Ай бұрын
If you took the 20 billion from the scam carbon capture technology that the government forked out last year to corrupt energy companies, maybe it could be spent on the national grid, and then when it gets a bit windy, maybe the power could actually stay on. Instead of the current 3rd world set up you have now. Just a thought.
