All these are funerary items, they depict the symbolism of the renaissance. Most often there is an image of a soul in the form of a bird, maybe a person with bird wings, so it was shown that the soul entered a new body. Another frequently used symbol is a lion, it shows the beginning of rebirth in the constellation Leo, a lion with bird wings shows the soul in the constellation Leo.

Can we get past this," not much is known about the Etruscans." There are ample archeological sites, well excavated and museum archives full of Etruscan artifacts in Italy. The problem is we don't have enough people studying them. Even the Italian government knows where TONS of unexcavated tombs are and they do NOT excavate because they don't have enough money to fund the excavations, nor money for the maintenance and storage of the artifacts. We need MORE foreign universities to take up these excavations and research projects! Not only those of ancient Romans and Greeks.

Despite designing the beautiful column reliefs for the doors of the Brooklyn Public Library it should be noted, because all artwork requires context, that Herr Jennewein was a white supremacist and Nazi sympathizer.

Dr van Oppen is fantastic - the TMA is lucky to have such an energetic and engaging curator. I do hope to see either of these exhibitions, at the TMA or even at the MFA Boston (which would warm my heart as I used to work there.) Thank you for sharing.

Why are you uncommented showing works by Jennewein which he also sold to Adolf Hitler in 1938? (like Repose and Dancer). Jennewein showed 10 bronzes at the Great German Art Exhibitions in 1937, 1938 and even still in 1939 (after the Christal Night). These were Nazi show case exhibtions of pure Aryan art, were Jennewein was a 'preferred artist'. See also the updated Wikipedia page on Jennewein.

The blurb about the deck terrace include the word "dine"! PLEASE do have a first class lunch room with a view on the premises. It is my best memory of the musea I have liked the most: having a lovely lunch on site with my friends/family. discussing the exhibit and sometimes even being able to go back if we find someone missed something.\: National Gallery of Art, the van Gogh in Amsterdam, an ethnic museum in Surabaya. (Secondarily, there is nothing suitable within a sweaty walk from the museum anyway)

So, you hang a Confederate flag from a noose? The North was industrialized. It had a multitude of factories. The South was chiefly agricultural. There were plantations with slaves and fat, rich owners. Most of the South, however, was made up of small homesteads that barely made it from year to year. They fought accidents and disease and insects and drought - just to keep going. They scraped by year to year and rarely was there even a small excess of what they needed. Most of them had never seen an African nor did they know anything about slavery. They worked sunup to sunset nearly every day of the week. Animals need to be fed and watered every single day. They might take a few hours off on a Sunday. Nearly every night they went to bed exhausted. Literally too tired to think. Those that have excavated the bones of farmers from both the North and the South testify that their bones were so worn down and resulting arthritis so bad that by the time they were 40 they were crippled. A huge army was assembling in the North and would be marching South to take their homesteads. A man fights for his land and his people. Anyone who believes that those young men who fought under that Confederate flag were willing to be crippled or killed so some fat cat plantation owner could get richer is an idiot. They didn't care about states' rights and they damned sure didn't care about the price of cotton except as it applied to their basic survival from year to year. They were fighting underneath that flag you treat so despicably for a little piece of land and the beloved people that lived on it. That's what they walked barefoot through the snow on empty bellies and ran into the terrors of war in the face of cannon fire for. Hell no they weren't doing it so some fat cat slave owner could get rich while they barely made it year to year. Common sense ought to tell people that. I will always treat the Confederate flag with the utmost respect in order to honor those valiant young men who fought year after miserable year against accident and disease and insects and drought who ended up having to fight an invading army as well.
