thank you for posting this video. turn 10 is known for this. If you freeze the video at 12:49, it looks like the right wheels are in the dirt and the left are on the pavement. The steering wheel is pointed left, which is the natural reflex to try to stay on the pavement. It also sounds like there a decent amount of throttle input. In those cases, the steering wheel should be pointed straight, off throttle, no brake and just coast and either re enter the track slowly or just drive into the grass, which may be safer. There is massive run off on the right and very little on the left. we can all see many different tire marks in that area, as mishaps such as those usually happen here.

What you are saying is *exactly* the right thing to do. I have said these words to students before and since. All you drivers out there take heed of these words! The following is a more detailed analysis and by no means an excuse. I wish I'd had more telemetry to get down into the nitty gritty, but there's a difference between the setup on this car and my other car which I believe would have made it through without the crash: shock rebound stiffness. I knew going in it would be close but I was confident I'd still be on the curbing so I stayed in it. My other car has made that line before, but it has much softer suspension. The curbing actually bounced my right rear wheel off the ground briefly causing the first spike in rpm. Limited slip differential in the rear rotated the car just enough to put me in the dirt. In several other occasions, I have found that the stiff rebound on the rear shocks of this car will leave you with one wheel off the ground. If you don't let off the throttle, you're begging for a broken axle or worse. I've broken more than a few axles on my BRZ this way and it's finally sinking in that the driver's heavy right foot is the root cause 😊

Moral of the story: don't track on VIR, it's unsafe. The moment you put a wheel on the grass you might as well be skating on ice. A proper race track should have wide asphalt safety run off areas. Sorry for the incident, stuff like this is bound to happen when you push but it shouldn't have to end like this.

Negatron, very disagree. VIR is very safe as race tracks go. See Sebring, Daytona, or Dominion for contrast. Impact barriers are properly placed and meet IMSA standards. I've crashed there multiple times and walked away from it. Any asphalt run off areas will be used by racing drivers for more track. Grass isn't the problem, it's a lack of driver training, escape route planning, and racer crash analysis verdict here without the telemetry or video of the footwell is driver error applying too much throttle too early over curbing while asking for both the front and rear wheels to provide lateral acceleration. Driver deserves kudos for being caged, helmeted, on a race track, and belted with good restraints.

Dang, sorry to see. I'm always thankful when I leave with my "trophy" but know these accidents are unavoidable. Is your car fixed?

Thanks for the video. I will be at Watkins in a couple days and this helped me anticipate what a Camaro will do there. As for your telemetry data, it looks like you have a similar setup to mine: gopro, obdII reader and the app. There is no brake data transmitted by the obdII, so TrackAddict attempts to predict when you are on the brakes and assigns it a value of on or off, with no indication of braking pressure.

Glad it was helpful. I've also got an external GPS for 10hrtz sample rate. My phone can only do 1 sample per second on it's own.

I just watched your video as I'm preparing to go to Watkins Glen this April. I also had the thought that the lap time is very similar to VIR which is my 'home' track. It was funny to me when you said this at the end of the video. I love the Camaro SS - had a 2016. I'm now in a C8 Corvette. I've posted videos from CMP and VIR. All the best! Have fun out there.

I wish I'd taken out my camera sooner. This guy had some drivers laughing hard with his animated antics. Much better than last year when everyone was just screaming at each other.
