Interesting. I'd like to do sota but use a 7300 with a big 30ah Bioenna battery for portable. Quite a bit to carry with my now failing knee (too much abuse in the moutains over the years), not to mention the other things to make it more comfortable and sheltered when you get there. Hats off to the guy for the commitment and the endurance.

OK, I have an HOA-ish residence situatuon ... I was on the edge for getting an IC-7300 ... if I can find one at a decent price ... (shh: there is a misspelling of "ICOM" in the upper-left-hand corner second line of your printed summary page at 19:25 )

I'm glad to see I'm not the only "crazy" person backpacking my IC-7300 around, though we don't have summits here in Indiana. For those interested, my pack with the radio, 20AH battery, coax, antenna, chair, table, tarp, and snacks/water runs around 35lbs. The make and quality of the backpack make a big difference in how much weight I can carry comfortably.

I bet Chris has a couple 45lb plates in his pack as well.. once a Marine always a Marine! Hoorah!

Sorry to hog comments. Made EFHW for my FT891 and tuned it first with the analyzer then retuned it to match the SWR meter in the rig which made it possible to run that antenna with no tuner to cart around. Regards vk5cz ..

You are correct. I've used the 891 with dipoles and a chameleonantenna MPAS.
@willian.direction6740Ай бұрын
Used my 891 in Parks a lot and find the DNR not that good for weak signals either, better off putting up with the QRN and pulling out the RST on the exchange. Especially if you compare it to the bench mark Elecraft portable rigs its a 5 out of 10 for hearing the signals in the noise. I keep my power lead right away from coax if possible as it shuts down the BMS in my LifePO battery. good work Chris.
@robertvantichelt6448Ай бұрын
Get rid of the mfj939 and use a tuned antenna. Linked dipole or EFHW and a 20-30' telescoping fishing pole. Your signal will improve by probably 1 s unit

I /accidentally/ bought a FT-891 last year and took it for a trial run on a POTA activation. My intent (someday) is to put it in the 4Runner for use as a mobile HF rig. That'll work for POTA activations in the winter, too. The menu system is a bit wonky, but that can be overcome with some practice. I haven't gotten around to programming the three front buttons (yet). But that will help. I don't like having to jump into the menu to set the keyer speed. I'm spoiled by the Elecraft rigs that have it on a knob (where it should be). When activating I *always* slow down to the caller's speed. I so appreciate it when other activators do that for me. Interestingly, the audio section of my KX3 also breaks up (it's distortion from overdriving the audio amplifier, I think) when I get a loud station. This causes an immediate scramble to turn down the audio gain. It usually scares the crap out of me too! ;) It's a good review, Christian. Thanks for doing it for us. 73 de AG7TX

Great video Christian! It's very interesting to see how the Yaesu FT-891 performs in SOTA activations. I've just subscribed to your channel and started exploring your blog-really well done! I'm currently studying CW, and I found the 'Tips' section on your blog incredibly helpful. As a fellow SOTA and POTA activator, I'm getting more and more convinced to buy this radio for my own activities. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! 73 de Emilio IU8QTM

The width of the NAR filter setting can be adjusted using the WDH button (Advance manual pages 30-31). You might find a width that works better for your needs, or just always use WDH and give yourself continuous adjustment. de AC7PB

Hi, I have a few Baofeng UV-5R radios that I’ve been experimenting with. Recently, I decided to upgrade and got a pair of Quansheng UV-K5's, which I really like. Then, I felt the need for digital radios and purchased a Baofeng DM-1701, hoping to catch some local digital chatter. However, I haven’t been able to pick up anything at all. It seems like I might be doing something wrong, or maybe there’s simply no one talking. Thanks. P.S. I got the digital radio because whenever I scan the area and hear chatter, it’s just static. I know this is because they’re transmitting digitally. After googling digital ham radios, I found the DM-1701 and decided to try it.

I've used Fusion, and DMR, and a friend's D-STAR. After doing some additional research, I really like DMR for it's end-user centered design. In most cases, you have control what the repeater subscribes to. I've written a few articles on DMR. Several of those are focused on the Anytone implementation but there are several there that apply to any DMR radio. Have fun!!!
@fc11336 ай бұрын
@@TheHamNinja Thanks, but I am having zero fun because, like I said, I am not picking up anything on this radio. Seems like DMR requires you to set this thing up first, before you can even hear anything. I did not know this is how it works. Anyhow. Thanks.

I still have my hand held Icom ic-31a . In DV 440 mhz mode I can get super clarity digital voice when I drove in my car and my daughter in her room good 2 miles city tests. I’m sure I can get 5 times the range with external antenna. I can also hit a repeater with a Yaesu FTM-100dr base station with a 35 feet external antenna which is about 90 miles away which analog can’t do w

Thanks for a nice review. I like your leg strap and small CW paddles - Can you provide a link to them? I'm currently using full-sized (i.e., bulky and heavy) paddles on a leg strap and I'm looking for something smaller and lighter. Also, is the angle of the paddles where they attach to the leg strap adjustable? Thanks

The strap is from americanmorse.com/. I normally use the begali adventure paddles but in this case, I'm taking the N0SA paddles out for a spin. You'll notice that paddle in other videos. AMR does make some nice padles as well.
