As a regular gigger this has been in my rep for over 30 years. I had a beer or two with Eric in my music bar in Hong Kong when he came to several folk festivals. Like many do, I learned the words from the recording. For about 10 years I thought the reference to the 'gentle old black gin' was reference to an alcohoiic drink to ease pain, as with cowboys in flims when a bullet is dug out. Then DUH, I realised it was a reference to a female aborigine. As you will guess, I am not Australian.

How sweet, how fortunate some of us are to have nice sounds , like music, to enjoy in this world of ours. It brightens up a moment.

I make homemade and more professional instruments. The ingenuity shown in these instruments is amazing have seen several violins and fiddles made from old Clogs with the toe and foot boxes opened up and a neck fitted. I have seen and played Appalachian Dulcimers Made before and shortly after WWII from old orange crates. Staples for frets that on most of them were for noting on the first string and not set up for modern scale but the old Greek scales. All of these instruments were wonderful and a pleasure to hear or play.

I make homemade instruments, too. This is very cool. I hope it becomes a family heirloom.

This instrument has such an interesting, eerie yet familiar/homespun quality about it. Whatever he’s using to play the broom handle scrapes against the string so sharply. It can be a lot to get used to, but for that very reason I think this would be an awesome instrument for like a horror movie

This is the second I have a seen Kerosene Tin Banjo. The man who played it at an old town hall call it his guitar. At the same place a block had a large tea chest with a broom stick and string and used it as a bass. O those were the days. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

It's a great video. However, the hat is not woven. It is braided. Braiding is not weaving technically speaking. Nor is it plaiting, although colloquially it is called platting. The 'plat' is a braid.
