Prof Sheldon was a teacher of mine. He made me tear through books so EXCITED to even take his tests. I met another woman later in life who said she also had him as a teacher and we both lit up and said wasn’t he amazing and I can’t explain why, but he just made you feel that you were so lucky to be in that classroom. I still have my book by Abe Maslow that I highlighted with crayons lol I just dove into that book but it was definitely the teacher that made it all exciting

I fail to understand how acceptance of death would make one more humble and grateful. Is it such a revelation to reminded of one's death as if there are people who have never thought about it?

I'm really always truly amazed at these talks on "what happens if you are reminded of death." Sheldon is great and his expositions are always full of wonderful twists and turns, but I can't say I ever felt terror or fear of death. Perhaps it's the "awe" that was mentioned here. I am awed by everything around me and feel but a small part of it. I feel safe in Jesus Christ.

Life is tragic simply because the earth turns and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time. Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, which is the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death-ought to decide, indeed, to earn one’s death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible to life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us. But white Americans do not believe in death, and this is why the darkness of my skin so intimidates them. Sheldon left out Norman O. Brown, who preceded Becker (as Becker acknowledges), and is deeper and more profound than either Rank or Becker. Sheldon, it seems, has turned into an "entertainer," repeating his same "bit."
@michellemay2081
@michellemay2081 4 ай бұрын
I could not disagree more thoroughly - and I’m sure you’re aware that Becker argued forcefully that Brown’s belief in the power of free love (influenced by his Santa Cruz days?) left him miles behind Rank and Soren intellectually when it came to reckoning with anguish and non-being, etc.
@RichardKoenigsberg

@@michellemay2081 Complete nonsense. Brown did not "advocate" anything. And he wrote LIFE AGAINST DEATH in 1959, when he was at Wesleyan University. WAY BEFORE he was at Santa Cruz, where he didn't write about sexuality.

Terrific conversation, puzzling how mainstream psychology still neglects existential realities.
@shengloongtan229
@shengloongtan229 Жыл бұрын
You're speaking like an American 😂 There's no such thing as "mainstream psychology", it's like saying newtonian physic is the mainstream and schrodinger is not. They are all different branches and disciplines of a subject, like the lady moderator is a childhood developmental psychology specialising in autism, is she mainstream? Then there's behavioural psychology, clinical psychology, pathological psychology, sexology
@Xanaduum
@Xanaduum Жыл бұрын
It would be better to replace mainstream with institutional then. The existential philosophy side of psychology isn't seen as very scientific or measurable or even cost effective- same reason CBT will always be more popular than Psychoanalysis. Although you could also just say, common discourse. The quantum physics, Newtonian physics analogy isn't quite accurate. For example I can speak about Maslow and attachment theory in the NHS in the UK but if I talk about Otto Rank and Ernest Becker I will get blank looks. But anyone who knows anything about science knows who Newton was and Shroedingers cat, quantum physics is mainstream now. So the reason I'd say it's ignored is, 1. Money - institutional wise 2. Measurable/seen as scientifically serious 3. Sounds esoteric, much like Lacan or Jung's later work - These things were what Freud was worried would happen and drag all of psychology/analysis with it.
@shengloongtan229
@shengloongtan229 Жыл бұрын
@@Xanaduum again i have to disagree with you. Jordan Peterson personally said to Solomon, that his terror management theory is the most empirically proven psychological theory. And he was right. You would be surprised to find out how many psychological theory have no prove, sometimes there is even no way of proving it. There certainly are many dispute and criticism early on, but that's true of any new studies or theories. With the amount of evidences and studies we have for terror management, i dont think psychologists would dispute the legitimacy of terror management theory, they would most likely dispute what the studies implied about terror of death, but not the legitimacy of the theory itself. But its true that most profit-seeking institution would not pay any attention to his study, that's sad, but still, he is a professor at a prestigious university. It is also true that most people avoid topic regarding death, especially ones that go so deeply into exploring your anxiety on the possibility that you would die anytime, a few hours later, tomorrow etc. conclusion, these conspiracy about "mainstream academic" is overblown. IDK if you're a big fan of Graham Hancock , but academic is a place of great skepticism, if you have a extraordinary claim, you'll need extraordinary proof to be taken seriously. It's just that.

Becker assumes, perhaps dogmatically, that Religion is a "humanly constructed" belief, which is nothing new, Freud and Feuerbach. How does he know that? From what source did he derive that conclusion? How does he know that religion isn't based on a fundamental reality underlying all that is? Hhhhmmmmm????

Just now as I was listening to Dr. Solomon I realized I am going to someday die. First thing tomorrow morning I shall begin several transference and immortality projects. I'm not putting up with this. If I am intelligent enough to be self-aware then I am intelligent enough to fantasize and deceive my way out of this dilemma. Stay tuned for a report on the happy results of my desperate endeavors. If you don't hear from me by the end of--oh, let's say thirty years--then it's on to Plan-B. I don't have a Plan-B.

Becker assumes death is the end of everything and given this assumption humans go out of their way to deny this terror.......but, and I really want to talk to others who raise the question.....How the hell does Becker "know" that "death is the end of everything?" I'm serious, how does he know this? He gets a Pulitzer Prize on a book whose whose entire premise is that death ends in nothingness. I don't get it. Here is an after thought and question.....didn't Blaise Pascal show us that we deny death with diversion? Are Beckers ideas original?

Why don't they do something about the root cause - the reckless f****g! In this day and age, there is simply zero excuse for an unintended pregnancy. Wrap that rascal. Snug panties. Just say "No!" A solid punch to that horn dog's throat. Terminating a pregnancy should be so onerous that couples will think twice about doing the dirty deed. LoL^10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Abortions should be free. Cheaper for the state than unwanted children they can't afford or parent. But if you still have one walk into any Starbucks, there will be a free clinic in back. When you leave you will be sterile, there will be no repeat and certainly no three-peat. And we will hunt down the dumb SOB that contributed and fix his junk, too!!

So by the descriptions of Putin, I gather that the Corey Satter And Sheldon Solomon like all of the bombing that the United States has done and the genocide, and the enslavement of African people. So they agree with the US endless wars and bombing of people. They seem to be okay with that, because I don't understand how anyone can point fingers at Putin without discussing the United States. They were never going to bring that up if you didn't mention it Michael. They talk about the murder and bloodshed of the US as if it is nothing! I call them out on that. They should have lead with that analysis and they did not. And if you have the US acting like a serial invader, that has murdered millions of people, you're going t o have Russia and other countries becoming more aggressive. THE United States and NATO instigated this war with Russia. ?And two days before Russia went into ukraine, The US bombed Somalia! And that's alright with your guests, evidently., They just want the US to continue bombing countries like it is nothing! VERY DISAPPOINTING!
