Hello, I have just purchased a new to me Kombo 8 shaft and would like to replace the handles like you did. Where did you get them? I am so excited! The guild where I bought the loom, didn’t think they could be replaced. One of them is broken. Thank you for any information you can give me.
@spindletreestudiovideosАй бұрын
Hiya! Oh yes you can definitely replace them! If you haven't seen it, I did a video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWrOl6d9n89pqs0 Are you in the UK? I saw an extension kit (which makes the 4 shaft into 8), but I needed two sets of handles so I contacted the UK supplier George Weil and asked for a quote for just the handles. They shipped them in from Louet, took about 6 weeks. You could probably buy one set of four handles, if the others are fine. I ordered a few extra bits that needed replacing, so double check everything else is there and functional. If you live outside the UK you can contact Louet and ask for details of the local suppliers in your country. They were quite expensive, £116 I think for two sets, but Jane handles don't fit and if it makes it fully functional it's worth it as you can sell it for more of it's functional. I have a few other videos on the loom and I am planning to do a review of what I've changed. Any questions I might be able to help with, give me a shout 😄👍🏻

I am a beginner weaver, about to buy the same loom and realized I am concerned with the width of the loom can weave and the fact that I can't find much information on this specific loom on the internet. Now that you have used the loom and are familiar with weaving; if given the chance to go back in time and buy the loom again, would you? Thanks, in advance for any advice. :)
@spindletreestudiovideos2 ай бұрын
Hi, great question. Perhaps I should do a video on it at some point 🤔 I don't know if you've watched any of my others videos about refurbishing the loom or using it, but they might give you an idea about what it's like. There is a bit of information online. If you are on Instagram, feel free to DM me and I can send you the documents I have found for it. Also Jane Stafford's video on threading a Louet loom was super helpful and easier then the method I tried in my threading video. In terms of the width it depends what you want to make and how much space you have. I did initially want to buy something twice as wide, but this loom takes up quite a lot of space and the great thing about fabric is you can sew pieces together! The other thing you can do is weave double width. If you want to make large blankets or rugs etc maybe you need a bigger loom, but there are other things to consider, like the increased stretching of the body required to do a wider weft, space, transportation (mine easily fits in the back seat of the car). Would I buy it again. Yes and no. Mine was only 50 quid and I have spent probably £150 on refurb, plus all the other equipment required, so I think it was a good investment. If I had my time again I probably would have started with a rigid heddle. I like the textured yarn look and I think it's much easier to get going on and not as tricky to thread or maintain tension. Having said that I want to do overshot and other patterns eventually. I've had some health issues which means I can only do weaving in short sessions so that makes it harder, but I don't regret buying it. Essentially I want to get a rigid heddle as well as my table loom ☺️ How much weaving have you done and what price have you seen this loom going for?

@spindletreestudiovideos4 ай бұрын
Good questions! I don't think a mordant works with procion dyes, unless you mean the soda ash. I could be wrong though. I did use soda ash. I think maybe washing it before soaking in the sofa ash and maybe adding a bit more soda ash powder during the dyeing. I could have also used more dye powder. It was much stronger last time. I don't think I washed it first then, but I did add more soda ash powder and I dyed it just in the muck, possibly with more dye powder 🤔

Which type of wool is best for a beginner to use for warp which would be strong enough to take the pressure?
@spindletreestudiovideos5 ай бұрын
That is a very good question! I think it partly depends what kind of loom you have (rigid heddles you don't have to worry as much about a textured yarn getting caught in the heddles). If you use a single ply (not wrapped with another yarn as in 2,3 or 4 ply) the finished fabric can be more uneven once washed (though you might like that). Superwash wool is often used for knitting, but it doesn't 'full' or mesh together during wet finishing. I think it's also worth considering what you want to use it for as some wool can be itchy. Strength wise you can give it a pull and see how easily it snaps, but I thought some of mine were only suitable for weft and my friend said they'd be okay. There are other differences between weaving wool and knitting wool, I haven't quite got my head around those yet. I'll ask my friend who is much more experienced if there is anything else to bear in mind. I know she very much likes Shetland wool.

@@geewhizzgeewhizz6981 she said the only way to know is to test it. I guess you could get some wool and if you don't feel it'll work for a warp, you can always use it for the weft. May I offer a suggestion about body mechanics as you are weaving? When you send the shuttle, it’s OK to send it. You don’t need to hand it to the other hand. So that when you take the shuttle out, you continue it in a straight line and don’t pull it back towards you until it has cleared the warp. as your cell line gets closer to the beater, you’ll find yourself compacting the woven cloth at the edges and you’ll end up getting a curved fell line. I’ve also been advised to always be in a neutral shed or the next shed as you’ll end up with less draw in with a neutral shed, and it will stay put better in the next shed, Weaver’s choice. I’m thrilled for your new weaving adventures, and I hope you have a blast.

Your selvedges are getting really good! A tip when winding the cardboard pins or bobbins etc for on boat shuttles is to wind quite tightly to get a firm bundle and to leave an inch or so clear at each end, moving fractionally further towards the middle as you go, forming an ellipse. This prevents the yarn slipping off the edges and getting tangled.
