This song, "Coal Tattoo," is by Billy Edd Wheeler, who died earlier this fall (2024). Perhaps the best-known cover of this song was by Judy Collins on her _Concert_ LP, in 1964.

"Snowball Earth" is by Jesse Ferguson. Here's his recording, which I absolutely love: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHbYeWWmq6mVmLcsi=bn3Gf6hZubxepOPm Most of Jesse's recordings are of traditional songs, and they're terrific, but he sometimes writes original songs, too, and this is one of his best from his album, _Shift_. Listen to it, buy it, share it!

"The Wild Swans," by David Lenander, partly inspired by Peg Kerr's novel, _The Wild Swans_, and by Hans Christian Andersen's story, "The Wild Swans," certainly partly inspired in traditions and mythologies as in the story from the Grimm Brothers, "The Six Geese," and the Irish story of Deirdre and her brothers.

I want to cite the life and times and fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, and in particular, the retellings in the novel, _The Wild Swans_, by Peg Kerr. My class on Andersen was taught by Prof. Jack Zipes at the University of Minnesota, sometime in the 90s or 00s. This song is "The Wild Swans," by David Lenander. This performance dedicated to Kelson, and the members of my 2019 class on "Revisiting the AIDS generation" at the Quatrefoil Library in spring 2019.

Song lyrics for “The Wild Swans” Silently they drift [upon the/on] water Like white clouds upon the the sky She remembers shouts and talk and laughter Until they spread their wings and fly Chorus O the Wild Swans They are mounting up the air Splashing drops that glitter from the sky Rising as if up a spiral stair Shedding tears [of blood] with[out a/every] cry In the dark she gathers nettles for Weaving hope and blood and bone Into a fabric for their future Giving little thought or effort for her own. She conceals their souls in silence Keep their hearts beneath their shirts. Others wear theirs on their sleeves These brothers hide their lives and hurts She longs to cry their loves aloud But fear chokes off all [her] breath Yet the paradox of their lives is this That Silence equals Death They fly with all desperate speed What rescue can they bring by day What they might whisper in the darkness There are no morning words to say Chorus ii O the Wild Swans Descending down the air Shedding silence as they die Abandoning despair To cast their song against the sky Chorus iii O the Wild Swans Parade through water or the air In formation they are proud At last defying death they dare To shout their loves aloud. Coda: At last she’s left to mourn and ponder stories of their blood lost and spilt Writing with a swan’s wing feather Stuffing swansdown, telling stories, Stitching patches for the Quilt. -David Lenander, June & December 2019
