I love most of your analysis, but we have to remember when this takes place. It is a man's respnsibility to take care of his family in every way. Yes, there is ego, but it is based on how he understands his role as a husband is. Remember in the street he speaks of her respect for him and his place as the man in her life. Not only her life, but her mother and sisters because the father is dead. He will understand just how well she can take up for herself especially with him beside her.

Apologies for being a bit late with my comments. I really appreciate this review. I especially like you including also the first meeting Colin and Penelope had in this season as it seems no one else is realizing how important this was for Colin to understand that their relationship changed while he was away. This scene together with the scene at the last ball, when she turned around to walk away from him to speak with Lord Debbling, are so essential. Colin came back from his travels and was overwhelmed by seeing Penelope (though she didn‘t reply to his letters). She was neither happy to see him nor did she behave with him in the normal way - something which really hurt him but he couldn‘t understand why she was behaving like this. The moment at the ball end of episode 3 he was dying, seeing that she turned her back on him and decided to be with another man. I fully agree with you that this was an underrated scene. In my view, this was the moment he knew he will lose her unless he confesses his feelings to her

Finding your voice is a lifelong journey for some and can seem as gradual as the Colorado River slowly eroding the rock in the Grand Canyon. For others like myself it comes easily, most of the time TOO easily, as you saw in my post of your Bridgerton review, LOL. The fact that you are going to therapy and the you have the self awareness to know that you want your voice to be heard is a huge step forward. To be able (even thought it took multiple takes) to clearly articulate you thoughts and feelings about a subject that you care about is amazing. I applaud your resolve to put yourself out in the world and not let fear of rejection interfere. Even if I disagree it is important to have that dialogue so that everyone can hear other points of view, because through communication we all are enriched. As usual, I have expounded too much, so may I simply finish by saying bravo to your endeavors and I along with everyone else will support your efforts.

@@shannonrudder Well, at the risk of becoming a cliche and to ensure I don’t get too long winded as you know I have a tendency to do, I will simply say that if you need a sounding board that can be neutral because I am not apart of your life and hence have no need to soft petal or be effusive to lesson my opinion. My Love Ricochet by Whatsabex - this is the most realistic charcterization of Polin I had read. They fought a lot and Colin still lashes out but they talked. I hated the silent treatment, its far worst. From fantasy to reality a Polin history by BJJJHVVV. I liked how Colin fights for Polin. It's nice to see Polin married life as well. Letters from a friend by Storyhadmelike - Just loved to see jealous Colin for once.

Judt adding to the scene where he wants to take control of the situation with Cressida. We have to remember that he felt no control, he has no say in their situation. Thank you for pointing that out! Colin’s need to assert control in that moment really does highlight his struggle with feeling powerless in his circumstances. I love that Penelope doesn’t get jealous or compare herself to the other women he been with which is very mature on her part. When she says, “I hope I was good enough for you” was her checking in in a way. Just like he wants her to feel good during their first time, she wants him to feel good too. I also love while he was starting to get jealous of her with other men, he just stands by her side and doesn’t make her feel guilty about it. I feel he acts mature in that sense. Now don’t get me started in the second half. I feel they ruined the development they built in the first half and could have been rewritten to do so.

Penelope and Colin is my favorite couple on the show. But while I love the first half of season 3, I felt they were sidelined a lot. There were many scenes from the book that would have answered many questions from fans and would added depth and nuance. While Colin had his jerkish moments in the book, he did not sulk and isolate himself from Pen. They had some arguments while figuring out their issues, but they still had talked together and have nice moments in between. But the previous seasons did a great job building them up. I feel the people who are hard on them don’t recognize the subtlety with them considering the other couples were explicit with their feelings. Nichola and Luke did a great job portraying the characters from the book. They did their research and their subtle expressions added to their internal monologues.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I've been meaning to start the book, but your comment has me itching to do it sooner than I'd planned. I can't wait (and am also a little scared lol) to see the differences between the show and the book. While I haven’t read it yet, I can see how including more of those deeper moments would have enriched their story even more. I completely agree that Nicola and Luke did an incredible job capturing the subtle emotions between Colin and Penelope-it’s great to know their performances aligned with the characters as written!

I loved and agreed with all your thoughts! The one thing I keep coming back to any time I rewatch part 1 and would love to know what someone else thought, is after Colin says to Penelope "there is a question I've been needing to ask you" then she goes off to dance with Debling, she doesn't give Colin a second thought, not even a glance which I find abit odd after their interaction and the way they were looking at each other..
@shannonrudder
@shannonrudder Ай бұрын
I think Pen gave Colin the ultimate chance to say something after Debling approached them. Her eyes were searching his, almost begging him to continue talking. When he didn't take that chance, she seemed not only disappointed but tired. Tired because she caught herself hoping yet again, only for that hope to be dashed away. When she takes Debling's hand, I think she doesn't allow herself a second glance at Colin out of the desire to protect her own heart. She has to force herself to be completely present with Debling, because the only other option is to continue hoping for something that (at least in her mind at the time) would never happen. But that's just my take! Let me know your thoughts, and thank you for commenting. ❤

I absolutely *LOVE* this season! I genuinely can't imagine any future season topping it for me! And I could listen to you describing and analyzing and gushing over all my favorite parts all day... seriously, I might just go back and watch this video again right now :) I'm clearly in the minority on this, but I never thought Colin had that much to apologize for, regarding his season 2 comment. Even watching it the first time. I felt for Penelope's heartbreak, for sure- her hopes had risen so high, just to get dashed so brutally. But I never saw it as him being mean or hurtful, and I was honestly surprised to see all the vitriol directed at him afterwards. After all, what did he really say? That he wasn't courting Penelope (true) and that he had no plans to (also true, as far as he knew at the time). If she wasn't in love with him, and we heard that exact exchange, wouldn't it just sound like any close platonic friend who is *always* being asked if they're dating their friend and having to explain (again) that no, seriously, they're REALLY just friends? It only hit the way it did because we felt Penelope's heartbreak in that moment. But as much as we all want it, he doesn't owe it to her to return her feelings. The fact that she was disappointed by this doesn't mean that he was cruel for saying it. People say he called her undesirable in front of those other potential suitors, but did he actually say that? Or did we (and Penelope) just assume that was the reason for his denial? Filling in the blanks in the most hurtful and painful way possible, because that's what people do. People say he found the very idea of courting her laughable, but did he actually say or mean that? Or did we just assume that his light, joking tone and their laughter were at her expense? Think about it only in terms of Colin's character for a minute. Is he the type of man who would openly make fun of *any* woman that way? Let alone his best friend who he is very protective of, and who he had just promised to take care of less than an hour before? And yet people are more than ready to believe that in that one moment, he just decided to disparage her to a random group of guys for laughs. It doesn't make any sense. One of our natural tendencies, when people hurt us, is to try to tear them down in return (even if only in our own thoughts) to try to mitigate the damage. This is why men call a woman a bitch when she refuses their advances, and why we're tempted to call people who criticize us idiots or jerks, or worse. Because if we can make it their own failing, or lower our opinion of them, we don't have to feel as bad about their criticism/rejection/etc. Another tendency is to jump right to the most painful conclusion, because for some reason we feel like we're protecting ourselves from further pain by taking it all on in the moment. In the scene between Colin and Penelope at the Danbury ball, we see her do just this- making two negative assumptions about Colin's feelings/intentions that we know aren't true. When he compliments her dress, she assumes he's mocking her. And when he suggests they go somewhere private to talk, she assumes it's because he's ashamed to be seen with her. But we the audience just saw him interrupt a conversation with two men (who were part of the group he was talking to in season 2, btw) to inquire after her, and when they tried to brush it off as if she were beneath his notice, he straight up ditched them to go check on her, with no pretense whatsoever. He is obviously not ashamed to be seen with her. And when she calls him cruel for his comments the season before, we cheer her on for standing up for herself and calling him out. But was he really being cruel? Or is this yet another example of Penelope jumping to the worst conclusion in her pain, embarrassment, and anger? To be fair, his wording was unnecessarily emphatic (which I honestly think comes down to him not recognizing the feelings that he already had for her... he protests too much). He did hurt her feelings, and might have hurt her chances with those gentlemen. So she has every right to be upset and to tell him so. But it seems clear to me that it was unintentional- it was a mistake (a hurtful one) rather than callousness or cruelty. And, as you pointed out, as soon as it is brought to his attention he immediately owns up to it, apologizes, and tries to make amends. It's also worth noting that so many of the people who wanted him to suffer and grovel for even longer, are the same ones who were mad at him for not just getting over the Whistledown reveal, which was a much bigger deal, with much broader ramifications. But they're only seeing Colin's actions in light of how they impact Penelope. When he hurts her feelings, he should be made to suffer for it. But when the shoe is on the other foot and he's the one feeling hurt and betrayed, he's a jerk for not just getting over it, because they want to see her happy and in love. Which is why it's so refreshing to listen to someone who loves Colin as much as I do, and sees what a genuine sweetheart he is! You caught so many of the subtle things that showcased how sweet their friendship is, and how Colin loved her even before he realized it. Thanks for this video! Seriously about to watch it again right now!

I swear sitting down to read this was a treat, especially given that I enjoyed your comment on my part 2 video so much. ☺ I would love to see a full breakdown of the season from you! Your analysis is truly incredible. I’ve always been a fan of Colin’s character, but reading your perspective has really deepened my understanding of his actions and motivations, especially in that season 2 moment. You’re absolutely right-when viewed from a more balanced lens, it’s clear that his words weren’t intended to be cruel, but rather a reflection of his own unawareness and confusion at the time. The way you broke down those layers, from how we often jump to the harshest conclusions when we’re hurt to how Colin’s protectiveness over Penelope shines through even when he doesn’t realize his own feelings, is so insightful. Your analysis has given me even more to appreciate about Colin’s journey, and I’m so grateful you took the time to share it. Thank you for the kind words about the video-I’m honored it resonated with you, and I hope you enjoyed your rewatch! ❤

LOVE THIS! 🥰Your channel is exactly what I needed because I also loved S3 and need to hear more positivity from fellow fangirls like yourselves! I get that S3 wasn't perfect and could have been handled differently, yes. But it wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be. (I can name other shows that were truly bad and ruined for me). At least to me, it wasn't. A lot of it made sense for the reasons you and other reactors have stated about Colin's character and his worse history with LW than in the books. His stronger reaction is valid considering what's happened in the show is much more serious than the books. One Tumblr post I saw really stood out to me about why Colin is the best ML and why Polin is the most realistic and mature ship so far. This poster said how their grandfather said that marriage/true love isn't about finding your happy ever after--just the opposite. It's about finding the person worth the struggle of going through pain, anger, hurt, and sadness together. You go through the worst with them, you see them at their worst, and you choose to stay with them anyway. Why? Because the good moments you have make the bad ones worth it. They're the only ones worth that pain and you love them enough that the bad times are worth the good ones. That's how you know you found real love. Polin showed that more than any other couple in the show. Even at their worst, they still chose each other. But you are so right about Colin's anger being rooted in his insecurities about not being good enough, if their love was genuine, and the deep hurt of betrayal because she was HIS Pen and their love had him on cloud 9. He told his brothers how he knew this love was real because he knew her and, as he said, now he wonders if he DOES know her. Of course he's going to be furious. Now he's forced to question if she was just another Marina and if the happiness she gave him was another lie. Then when realizing how rich and successful she is, he wonders if he's even of "use" to her like he thinks he should be as a man. His negative thoughts (and ego) got the worst of him and we saw him deal with all of those in a realistic manner before they finally came to a solid understanding of letting go of negative traits and thoughts. I honestly loved it all and am glad to find other fans who understand why. This WAS a love letter to Polin shippers! ☺

Thank you so much for this! Just what my Polin fangirl heart needed. ☺I've seen an excessive amount of negativity about season 3 and, while it could have been better in some parts, I honestly don't think it was that bad. (For me, Shadow and Bone S2 as a Kanej/Inej fangirl was a storyline travesty. That was butchered and definitely badly handled. But that's another rant. 😂) I love what we got of Polin, feel that a lot of it made sense (I love the analysis videos about Colin's character that go into more detail) and I just want to relish in the Polin storyline without the "S3 was horrible!" comments. Obviously, we're all entitled to our own opinions but the hate is honestly a bit much for me. Can't we just relish in the glory that is Polin a little bit more? 🥰 So many of your comments about Colin I agree with! I could go on and on, but I'll stop myself to keep this from being a whole speech. Haha. But, simply put, I love how head over heels Colin is for Pen! It's not only a well-done friends-to-lovers story, it's a beautiful case of "She fell first, but he fell harder." Which I LOVE and Luke's acting did a perfect job of portraying it. I really hope the writers give them a solid B plot in S4/5 because as much as I would love to see how the other couples are brought to the screen, I would LOVE to see more of Polin in comparison. Not gonna lie! Especially with the genius of Luke and Nicola's acting skills in playing Penelope and Colin and how well they play off of each other.

I think you should correct the phrase "gushing about polin" in your title to "gushing about colin", as you spent virtually no time at all in analysing Penelope's performance, which I believe to be exceptional! In truth, I could not quite detect the nuances in Colin's acting which you appeared to discover, finding, on occasion, that I had to guess how he might be thinking/feeling in a given situation (a problem I never experienced with Pen). Just a difference of opinion, I guess, but still a little disappointing given the overall bias.
