It's a scientific fact that as humans we need other humans. We need community and the safety of our tribe otherwise we wither away. Feeling the need for love from another person is natural but can also be intoxicating and it's often hard to know where one ends and the other begins. We need each other which is why we're able to bond with another human through physical touch. I love these stoic rules and the idea that detachment is this simple but it's not, at least for me. There are so many circumstances where we cling on to things or people for more complex reasons. Someone loses their husband 8 years from retirement. Beyond the loss of companionship there is the question of safety, security, and income. The widow doesn't have another 30 years to save up so she/he can continue to keep a roof over their head, food on the table, the ability to pay bills, and for medication. These circumstances make it extremely difficult to detach and I don't believe such cut and dry answers. I'm not saying these rules are wrong but much more difficult to follow in this very messy world.
