Russia borders 4 NATO states (Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia) with mainland and 2 more NATO states (Lithuania and Poland) through Kaliningrad region and Belarus. Ukraine, besides that, borders another 3 NATO states (Slovakia, Hungary and Romania), and Georgia borders Turkey (also a NATO state). If by Connor's logic Russia is afraid o NATO, they should seek to border as least NATO states as possible. If Ukraine joins NATO, Russia will border not 6, but 7 NATO states. If Russia annexes Ukraine, it will border 9 NATO states. Also, Georgia is the least strategic country to potentially attack Russia. Its massive row of mountains makes it incredibly hard to attack. Why not invade through Estonia, or Finland, or Poland? Also, Connor is a massive propagandist. He is now telling the west that US should cut their financial support towards Ukraine because Russia is too powerful and cannot be stopped. When asked during this debate, he said Russia was afraid of the massive invasion and was a total victim of the situation. His hypocrisy is unbelievable. Correction: at the moment of the recording, Finland was not a member of NATO yet. Would it make sense for Russia to invade Finland instead to prevent their NATO membership?

From what I've learnt from Star Wars. Politics is FUCKING boring dude atleast when it's handled poorly. Maybe people just wanna write a fun book or a fun TV show and haven't thought about the GRAND SCHEMES of the Empire of "Will never show up or matter in the fucking story."
@karbovskiy_dmitriy16 күн бұрын
Justus and Connor are so annoying and primitive thinking. They don't seem to draw any conclusions from the history, don't have any respect towards other discussion members and don't seem to have any logical or critical thinking skills. They don't know and/or don't understand the history of USSR and post-USSR states, Kosovo and other states in question. They dodge the simplest questions and make unrelated arguments. I've seen it so, so, so many times, it's disgusting that people still deny logic and think like that. Their arguments are so bad they could be seen as anti-russian propaganda. Their entire argument is "war is bad but we'll do it anyway because reasons". Also, Adam was right they would play victims. No sign of intelligent life anywhere.

I see the point here, but I think we forget that the origins of fantasy have their base in mythos, not realism. The use of monarchies and dark lords make for vessels in discerning moral conflict as allegory. Take Tolkien, for example. His stories were about the triumph of general goodness and honor over great evil, and the world reflects that. Not all fantasy needs politics or anti-heroes to be interesting, though they have their place too.

Some people like fantasy that it is very black and white because the real world is complicated enough already. Others like it for other reasons. The former group probably doesn't want complicated, "realistic" or immersive politics. They just want a good guy to cheer on and a bad guy to hate.

Politicians are scum bags because of democracy
@declanedmison54429 күн бұрын
Monarchs aren’t subject to the people. They’re subject to their nobles, and to the powerful in their society. In the most long-lasting monarchies, the common people were incredibly poor, practically forbade from education, and had zero social mobility. This was intentional, because uneducated people have a much harder time rebelling. They still did rebel, it’s just the monarch had them massacred when that happened. And they certainly played politics with people’s lives! Let’s force all the levies to fight and die so I can have this land that totally belongs to me, or so I can get a nice bit of cash. At least our politicians have to look the people in the eye. Most peasants under monarchies only knew their leader by a name. And why would a monarch listen to some random, uneducated peasant? You might not even speak their language! This is not even mentioning how horrible their succession system was… or that a monarch could, you know, develop dementia or go insane in office and there’d be nothing people could do except go to war or murder over it… There’s a reason there’s so few monarchies left. It’s a bad system.
@demonic_myst4503Ай бұрын
monarchies do tend be more stable than other systems even the founding fathers outright stated 99% of democracies go bad The kinds people who run to lead a democracy want power or have a goal they dont care for people they have a ideology or a cult backing them they are not good leaders democrscies encurage sociopaths to take power

If I wrote a fantasy story I would not invest that much time into developing politics because I would want to write an adventurous story. And for that there isn't a need for a deep dive into politics. Why should be? However a book series called "Game of Thrones" that would have a shallow view on politics would feel like a scam. So different stories have different kinds of focus. I think, what makes a story good, is tension and you can have that already on a personal level. No need to call someone a "baby brain", because politics is left out. Insertion of politics can also be misused to validate your own views and discredit others. So, before you implement it badly, write only about what is absolutely necessary.

There is one glaring obvious fact that this video is ignoring is that Tolkien’s stories are not a political intrigue story like the Witcher. It’s an adventure story where war is on their doorstep. Why would you have plot lines about factions when the main point is to destroy the ring and fight this evil that has started the war? A complex political plot is not necessary to a story if it doesn’t need it. Tolkien’s politics work with the story because it’s not about politics. I know his works sound like tropes because he was a pioneer that literally was copied by many after him. It doesn’t make sense to compare two different types of stories. Instead it would make sense to compare the Witcher to stories like Game of Thrones or Dune that focus more on politics and not adventure. Maybe look for fantasy political intrigue stories to solve this problem and not fantasy adventure.
