oh! saying that alpha I is his first attempt at creating a "disruptor" is hella interesting, considering that he's the only one of it's creations so far that *has* been a protagonist in it's game. like, nero mentions it back in delta, but I like the consistency here. the protagonists are the weak ones. the ones who have no business winning, and yet do, anyways. it's some undertale shit. It's determination, but probably a bit less meta in the context of 14

The name "Enterprise" in the US Navy actually has a long and fascinating history en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_of_the_United_States_Navy_named_Enterprise. "The Big E" was one of only three American carriers to survive the entire Pacific War (World War II). The ship was so vital that the Japanese reported it sunk three times, only for it to keep returning to battle. Maybe it's an obscure historical reference? Who knows.

English localizers absolutely come off as conceited and condescending, always have to me whenever I hear anything come out their mouths defending fuck ups instead of owning them then changing/growing like an adult. Even just the way a lot of them seem to sneer at everyone else when explaining their job, as if to implicitly brag that they're any level of multilingual so they're not like other ENG ppl, while writing their own prose on projects in a way that shows they aren't a writer of any caliber but Shapes and Colors for Toddlers in their native fucking language either. It feels like this weird intersection of conceit because they speak English, a racist feeling of superiority that if a story isn't the most Western or Generic White(TM) shit ever it's lesser/incomprehensible, orientalist views and xenophobia dealing with a foreign Asian language, and crippling insecurity because Mommy and Daddy forgot to hug them. Grown ass perpetual children actively spreading a miasma of malicious ignorance as their global export instead of sharing the arts with others. Just another contributor to why many native English speakers often live up to the stereotype of existing shoving their heads up their fetid assholes. Loved the vid. I feel like I'm finally understanding XIV, and I've been an unreasonable, unfounded hater of MSQ for many years because of Koji dragging his taint all over everything. My eyes are opened. regarding the Yugiri and forgiveness dilemma could that also be translated to ENG along the lines of "Please find it in you to forgive them due to my carelessness?" unless I'm fucking up how to read 免じて, I got this feeling based on how the villagers reacted negatively when she gives them her speech before this iirc, so it's like asking the player to forgive the villagers not only for their feelings but also Yugiri's provocation of their feelings which created a negative reaction- it rly is super roundabout lol

Humble polite speech in Japanese can be a real pain to translate for that exact reason. Yugiri especially uses a TON of ultra-deferent speech as a "loyal ninja" type, so like half of her lines are just formalized set phrases that end up roughly meaning "I understand" or "thank you" but with different levels of nuance.

@DoubleperfectK.O
@DoubleperfectK.O Ай бұрын
So that's actually pretty interesting as a question. I'd say the average line-to-line is technically better, but as a WHOLE it's actually worse. The further the game goes with individual rewrites and nonsensical line removals piling up on top of each-other, the more absurd their attempts to make stuff work with their old rewrites gets. So while we're getting less explicit dick jokes and sexual assault references being chucked in at random, we're getting an entire section where the Japanese script is talking about Transcendence, and the EN script never actually makes it clear that they're talking about "The Echo". It's like watching a compulsive liar struggling to try to keep their story straight, and coming up with increasingly unlikely explanations for why they're totally telling the truth.

Obviously the kami shit is the more egregious, but just ignoring that for a second, what's with all the dashes? that's not really how you use punctuation. I get that dashes can be used to set up an aside, sometimes. it's similar to using parentheses, but that's not how they're being used here. it's only being used to separate sentences.. boys, that's what a comma is for. The big stupid issues take the spotlight, obviously, but I just find it impressive how even on the very basic stuff, stuff that should be a given; sentence construction, punctuation, fuckiin' using the right words, they somehow fuck it up and make it always harder to read.

A lot of alphinaud talk in this one. Alphinaud is a character I fucking hated in EN. He was constantly mean and full of himself, and seemingly terrible at diplomacy, which would have been the one reason I would have seen everyone at the Dawn putting up with his ass. I mean really, it makes minfilia seem like an idiot, because she sends him to do all this political stuff, and he always fucks it up in some way. He throws a tantrum in front of Aymeric, he gets told off by the leaders of the three nations, and on and on. There's a tonal inconsistency there in the EN that really made it irritating whenever he showed up on screen. Then when the whole crystal braves thing happened it felt like just comeuppance for the little asshole. I was glad everything went to shit for him. the difference in the treatment of alphinaud is *THAT* big. And the worst part is, for all the mean spirited shit surrounding that character that must have been on purpose, I don't think the loc team meant to have him be bad at diplomacy. I think they just don't know how to write diplomatically, since that involves being aware of your position and trying to understand the other person's point of view, both skills very clearly lacking among these people.

I just discovered this series, and I'm really dismayed that the translation is so butchered. I like learning about fantasy lore, so it's annoying that some of the stuff I've learned about Eorzea might be erroneous. I decided to check the french translation since it's supposedly more accurate (and I know french). First the exchange between Minfilia and the Warrior of Darkness. Minfilia : Je suis prête à aller dans votre monde pour tenter de contenir la Lumière qui l'inonde. Rien n'est encore perdu. Guerrier des Ténèbres : Foutaises ! Pourquoi devrions-nous croire vos belles promesses ? Hydaelyn, sa Messagère... Où étiez-vous quand nous avions besoin de votre aide !? Minfilia : Tout comme Zordiarche, qui est impuissant sans les Asciens, Hydaelyn est incapable d'empêcher directement la surabondance de Lumière. How I would translate the french: Minfilia: I am ready to travel to your world to try to contain the Light that floods it. Nothing is yet lost. The Warrior of Darkness: Bullshit! Why should we believe your pretty promises? Hydaelyn, her Messenger... Where were you when we needed your help!? Minfilia: Just like Zodiark, who is powerless without the Ascians, Hydaelyn is incapable of directly stopping the overabundance of Light. And then the interaction between Alphinaud and Alisaie: Alisaie : On peut savoir pour qui elle se prend, celle-là ? Alphinaud : Notre amie a dû nouer un pacte avec cette adorable Pixie. Elle me rappelle un peu toi, quand nous étions petits. How I would translate the french: Alisaie: Who does she take herself for? Alphinaud: Our friend has made a pact with an adorable Pixie. She reminds me a little of you, when we were young. So yeah, it does seem more accurate. I guess I'll have to play in french now. Pretty annoying to have to rewrite all my macros ;_;

People often say the Ascians were generic mustache twirling villains in ARR because their lore hadn't been written yet, but it seems that just isn't true at all. Likewise, the Echo/Transcendence and the Blessing of Light were indeed two different things since ARR, and it was the English localization that caused people (myself included) to confuse and conflate them for like four expansions until ShB and EW finally clarified... only for some to mistakenly call that a retcon. I'm very interested to hear about the expansions.

Yet i didn't think it was this bad. Like this wholly terrible. To me after seeing this and watching some of the stream VODs of your playthrough...I'm floored at the changes and the dialogue choices more than before. Whole important lines removed for no reason. Dialogue tone shifts and more...The stuff relevant in 2.0 keeps going into 7.0 and beyond... I desperately would love a mod in 14 to auto translate the Japanese text at least to some extent so i can read the dialogue that it was meant to be...because as much as i want to learn a new language, i don't have the time or mental capacity currently. And as you said, it shouldn't be a requirement to enjoy the actual story. I vow to never call it the Echo anymore either. It is Transcendence because now? That word makes everything in the game make 500% sense and clears up a lot of the stuff that happens.

@ExiaLupus 4 ай бұрын
I think the Echo works alright as a term initially devised and used by Minfilia and the Scions to refer to the whole visions of the past thing, but they should've had the Ascians call it transcendence - and once we hear it from them, and see that Sahagin priest *transcend* his physical body, have us start calling it by its true name. That's how I would've written it, anyway. What I'd really like to see is a plugin that displays a machine translated version of the Japanese dialogue even while my in-game text language is set to English, so I could (at least roughly) compare them side by side. Assuming such a thing is technically viable.
