Kurt sure played a lot of solos for someone who claimed to not care about guitar technique and didn't even bother learning to play the solos he actually recorded on the albums. I think part of him did enjoy playing leads, even though he scoffed at technical precision. I just wish he would have put a little bit more effort in both the live playing and recording of his leads. It would have paid off a lot. This is one of the things that's always been a bit of a pain point for me with Nirvana.

This song definitely works better played as a 4-piece band. The solo part especially sounds better with a rhythm in the background. However, it would have sounded even better if Kurt would have played the same notes to the solo as he did on the album in this performance, with Pat providing a solid rhythm.

Kurt has gone on record saying he just interprets the solos he recorded as he can't really remember how to play them exactly

I just view Kurt as a little bit contradictory at times. He sometimes enjoyed and insisted on playing leads even when Nirvana had a 4th member, but didn't bother to learn what he'd recorded and either played from memory or made something up on the spot. He lacked chops and has expressed disinterest and hatred for musical theory as well as investing effort to make himself a better guitarist. This doesn't make much sense to me. Typically, if someone doesn't have the chops, they would keep things simple and work within their limitations, like Johnny Ramone, for example. I'm not trying to judge KC, but just stating my opinion. I do enjoy some of his leads like the ones of School, In Bloom, Aero Zeppelin, Serve the Servants and Heart Shaped Box. I just think he was way better as a rhythm guitarist.

Greetings from germany. Literally after decades I dug out the "Colour and the shape" album again. This song is an absolute blast. I didn't remember it at all. Greater than great. Sadly i never saw the "Foo Fighters" live on stage although they had come several times to germany over the years. Greetings from autumn 2024.
