I used to watch Herbie all the time as a kid, and I've always wanted one of my own since. I just feel in love with the character 😍. I've had an actual 63 Sunroof Beetle project that my dad and I are turning into a Herbie. He pretty much got me into the Herbie craze. It's taken us a long time to get the project going, but we're getting closer to completing him. It's gonna be authentic!

I LOVE "Herbie Generation" 1958-early 1964 bugs and esp sunroof bugs. I owned 4 early '60s (a '61, 2 sunroof '62s and a '63) bugs and one non-QT '66 back in the day. My dad also owned a ceramic green 1960, the one-off year for that color (see my thumbnail). Your '62 bug is one of only two years of bugs that qualify to be made into a Herbie without any (significant) external modifications. Well OK, the real Herbie is a '63, which did not have a Wolfsburg crest. Factoid: 1963 was the first year for the optional $35 pop-out rear side windows. It's also the first year for the white leatherette with black dots headliner. Though many earlier ones (like yours) had their original torn up cloth "mohair" replaced with the '63 type. To turn a '58 to '61 bug into a Herbie only requires installing "High Heel" ('62-'67) taillights to replace their original "snowflake" taillights. Even your avg moviegoer is going to notice that. But other differences (no gas gauge/ivory steering wheel with black horn button/"dagger" door handles/"fat" speedo needle are not going to get noticed or cared about, esp if those shots are very brief in fast moving sequences. But one thing they will notice is that you're missing the "53"s on the hood and rear deck lid, as well as the stripes on the sunroof.

You have to hand it to the engineers & technicians who designed, constructed, and tested 100's of rocket engines, back in 1960-70's. We Pickens siblings felt the roaring engines while living in North Huntsville Alabama.

Committed a felony on that beach when I was stationed there in 1980... Just out of bootcamp reporting to the USS Saratoga from the midwest... Saw baby sea turtles struggling to get into the surf after being washed back up onto the beach, time and time again... So I helped them by carrying them out a little deeper... To be honest I would think having the moss on wood would make it more authentic, instead of grinding it off. Then again, I have no idea why I’m being recommended this video and I’m on the other side of the planet so my opinion might differ because of that.
