I am one of the few ha’oles (foreigners) that enjoyed Molokai. Here are my thoughts: Molokai is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. From the arid west side and it’s glorious beaches to the dense tropics of the east side, it is amazing. I had just left the Army and wanted to travel to one of the Hawaiian islands. I knew I didn’t want to go to Oahu or Maui because of the mass tourism and traffic. I was seeking healing and peace from my experiences in Iraq. As fate would have it, Molokai became my destination. I planned on staying there for two weeks but ended up staying for about 3 years. Sure, I was challenged to a couple fights with some local braddahs but it wasn’t that bad. Stand up for yourself and don’t be a punk. Once you get to know a few people, show them kindness and show respect no matter what. I was a stranger and yet I was invited to the most intimate Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners like I was a member of the family. Eventually I was somewhat accepted and shown the true beauty of aloha. Aloha means “breath of life from God.” I think the people of Molokai are some of the most genuine and down to earth people on the planet. I have so much love and respect for Molokai that I would agree, that unless you’re an exceptional person, leave Molokai alone. If you play music, Molokai might be for you. If you don’t bring preconceived ideas, it might be for you. I explored, surfed, drank beer, smoked a decent amount of pakalolo, fished, hunted, farmed, went to the best church in my life (Molokai Baptist) and was shown the true love of God. I was like a student during my time there. Remember that you’re a visitor, have nothing but respect and admiration. I was so moved by the story of Kalaupapa colony that when I went back to college I wrote my thesis on Father Damien and the epic story of Kalaupapa. It changed everything I thought I knew about God and religion. But that was my take. It’s not for everyone. For most of you, I would stick to Waikiki and then head back to mainland.
