these things take time to be bad, lets face it there was probably preventative ways to fix it before it got bad, its a problem that took time to be a problem, and the solution is going to take the same amount of time to fix. coral tanks are delicate to rapid changes in water parameters. i don't want to be rude and say that its your problem but the tank 100 % relies on you to keep the necessary conditions. i also get lazy and just recently i added reef flux because i am battling bryopsis, which slows down coral growth and is a toxic algae.

@@Chromie21 my heater malfunctioning was not at all my fault. Things like that can’t be predicted. I keep my tanks maintained on a weekly basis and the temperature spike happened overnight. I noticed ilthe next morning during feeding. This could have probably been prevented with a temperate kill switch but I don’t have one. The hair algae is just due to my CUC slowly passing and they will be replenished today. Diaotoms will pass. And the salinity spike was my fault, but I’ve had salinity spikes and never caused coral to recess and pass. I am not at all lazy with my tanks 😁

Sorry to see that happened, you can try doing water changes every few days to flush out the leftover bad stuff, might save some corals and reduce the algea. Grabbing a couple snails like margarita, nerite or trochus can help with the stuff on the rocks. If you need, I'm finally set up for RODI and reef water at the coral farm.
@WhiskersandWaterАй бұрын
The coral (the ones that are left) are slowly bouncing back. I have been doing minor water changes and cleaning the tank a bit more. I am getting more CUC this weekend to combat hair algae. The amazing news is I have had coraline algae growing so the tank is maturing. This pretty much gave me the push to start my 32.5 saltwater journey in hopes the stability will help. If you have seeded rock scape, I will definitely be needing some around December/January once I clean out the original tank.

@@WhiskersandWater My main grow tank should be well seasoned by then, even if not I have all the starter stuff like phyto, copepods, clean cheato and hopefully a tank full of amphipods too for once the bio-cycle has finished. Are you making your salt water with RODI water?
@WhiskersandWaterАй бұрын
@@ridgelon13 I am I have a whole system I set up that I got from bulk reef I just never did make a video on it. It’s been working great. I’ll be able to supply a larger tank with the water I need. Maybe it’s the salt I’m using. It’s the generic stuff you can get at petco which maybe isn’t the best I’m not sure.

For the saltwater tank, how do you know when to add corals like how dose all the parameters get in the tank after the cycle
@ridgelon134 ай бұрын
Go slow, I don't add fish for about a month to start. I'm old school, instead of using a bottle of quick start I drop a piece of shrimp and let it go till the ammonia spikes. When it's 'deadly' take out the shrimp and let the bioprocess take over till you have nitrates spiking and ammonia drops. Water change and add clean-up crew, then about a week later a few fish and wait for the ugly phases to go through. Corals like sps require a lot more time than softies, zoas and pallies are usually my first test corals. Once the first frag is thriving add a few more slowly over time until the whole reef is up and running. The whole time this is going on do water tests and keep a spreadsheet of the parameters so you can watch the progress. Now is the time to figure your tank out and learn to keep your parameters in check, the less sways the better your corals will do.

@@fixalot0 Cycling a tank can tank a month or so. I also tried the old school method but im impatient so I did go ahead and use Dr Tims ammonia chloride and Microbacter start XLM. Honestly, it depends on your patience. It took around 1.5 months to fully cycle my tank. Make sure to get ammonia and nitrites to 0 and have your nitrates teeter around 5-10ppm although some hobbiest have it up to 20ppm. API saltwater test kits are great beginner friendly testers that are fairly inexpensive. I made sure fish were suitable for the tank and then got an inexspensive mushroom. So far, all the coral I have in my tank are thriving, eating, and latching unto whatever surface I have. This hobby is definitely all about patience and time. Enjoy!

Oh... How I miss thee, Fish World in Raleigh, NC (when you were under the Chucky Cheese). So many tanks... so many beautifully healthy fish... a dedicated coral room with a huge variety... display tanks that would amaze the Barrier Reef... several helpful employees always working... and the store was just put together so well. And now I shop online... know why? My 3 LFS proudly display their fish... even the ones with ick. (Seriously... put a small hospital tank in back!!!) Their coral selection is horrible... unless you only want finger leathers, a couple mushrooms, and an old school green button polyp. (Know why no one is buying your corals? Because you've had the same ones since 1994.) While the coral selection is bad... there's no shortage of aiptasia! (Just throw some peppermint shrimp in, would ya! You have them in stock.) And dare to ask about the health of a fish... "Oh yeah, been here for months. Eating great. No issues." Even though you can almost see through the tang's stomach... assuming you can see past the white spots. If you buy a fish from one of my 3 LFS... medicated quarantine is a must. It's sad. I still love going to a fish store and just looking at all the critters, but I'd be just as well off going to look through PetCo's betta fish selection for a nice healthy specimen.

Nice job! The “chemicals” you got with the tank, don’t add any of it. Don’t add anything but water change 10% a week. The new salt water will have everything you need. Anything else you add will only increase nitrates and phosphate. Just my opinion.

I am mainly adding phytoplankton for my coral. As I do add more coral, perhaps if I ever consider SPS, I may need to supplement but I don’t use them for now. Thanks for the insight!

10+ year here, currently building a coral farm for retail selling. Best advice I can give is GO SLOW, GO SLOW, GO SLOW. No corals till 4-6 months minium and when you are putting in corals start with zoas. You can go way cheaper when starting, float atos are cheap and put a reverse flow stopper on the ato line. PH, Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrites for fish, worry about the rest when ready to start adding corals. RODI filter is a must....plus its way better water for drinking if you add some hymilain salt. Waste water can be used to water plants, we used to fill up the washing machine with it and wash cloths so it wasn't a waste. You'll recoupe the cost from gas, travel and buying water. Since you're not needing 100's of gallons you can get a small rodi unit for about $100. You'll get a bunch of algea blooms now that the fish are in, water changes will save the day. Need some clean up crew next, get that ecosystem up and running.
