I've been working on a spoopy supplement for Daggerheart (originally wanted to get it out in mid-September, but was told printed homebrew is forbidden until release) which is intended to add new elements on top of an existing campaign. But these spoopy ideas are pretty good. :) I may have to consider adding a new section on how to make the overall feel of the campaign the players are in more scary. :) (Or at the very least how to make the intended very scary encounters it contains more scary.) (Re: backstory / planned characters) Sometimes the unplanned thing is the more interesting path and story. (A big part of what can happen in my supplement is based on this.) Sure, let that player with a 20 page backstory play what they want, but I'd say next time you start a campaign challenge them to go in with no planning at all. See where they are taken in the moment. Maybe even go so far as after the others in the group have picked their choice (class, ancestry, community, etc.) pick something random from what is left. I have a similar feeling for criticals. Sure, they are great and sometimes just what they need, but consider that nat 1. The critical success takes you were you expected to go, but that nat 1 is going to take you somewhere unexpected, somewhere unfamiliar, and may lead to further story or adventure because of it. That crit that succeeds just, well, succeeds. It far less often will present new pathways or unexpected outcomes like a nat 1 can. I hope that Daggerheart players and GMs will see that with something like a high enough variance in a roll of Hope/Fear. If I ever get to GM I'd take a big difference, especially a failure, as an opportunity to introduce something new and unexpected in the player's path or the character's story.

Particularly if you’re running a one shot, you can replace or add to the Hidden Agenda idea with a prophetic nightmare. Give them a twisted, or even wrong, clue to one of the encounters they’ll have. Share the clues around, either to a single big encounter or to different encounters. I’ve actually done a variation on this in a campaign a few times. It’s easier to do in some ways, because you know the characters and you can plant things weeks in advance. But the players then forget about them…

If you’d like to see Jester Villians, Tales of the Misfits had an arc in a carnival. It wasn’t played for horror particularly, but it was definitely weird, tonally.

For the loss of control and slow descent into darkness, the “roll with fear” mechanic gives you a lovely way to add a twist to features the players use so they do things more and more unexpected and dark.

Expanding on the musical cue's One of the most fun sessions i have ever run was when i used the False Hydra. I set the audio to play white noise at 1% volume and very slowly increased the volume by tiny amounts. When something bad happens nearby, the white noise stops. Then after a little while i start it back from 1% Some of the players didnt realise how loud the audio was getting and when it shut off it was like it became *tooo* quiet

Be careful to check in with your players on things like that. Like I am sound sensitive, so something like that if I don't notice where the sound is coming from would cause me to pretty quickly become irritated, nervous, anxious, and violent feeling, without my knowing why I'm feeling that way. Which at the very least could ruin my ability to enjoy the game. (And things like that can take hours to 'calm down' from when you don't know the source and deal with it.)

I try to make each shopping episode as different from others as possible. One merchant didn't want gold, just help with something. Turns out, he was an illithid and wanted the player's brain. Combat! Another merchant had something stolen right before the character's eyes. Chase scene! Which then turned into being hunted by pirates. Another merchant, wasn't a merchant at all... He was the Gamemaster and just wanted to be entertained by watching the players draw from his Deck of Many Fates. Some merchants are more interested in rare items than currency. Other merchants refuse to barter-"Take it or leave it, pal! I'll just sell it to the next adventurer." Some are jovial and boisterous, others are glum and stoic. Some are pleasant, others are rude. Some are gossips and want to tell you a lengthy story before they barter with you-Better let them finish if you want decent prices. One of my merchants may not have the item you're looking for but usually knows exactly where you can claim it for the cost of the item. Or, they can acquire it for you, but their acquisition fees aren't cheap. Shopping adventures can be lame, but they can also be epic. Be epic, my friends, be epic!!

I can't love PF2e's three action economy enough. No confusion of switching movement with action, bonus action or anything. Everything you can do is an action and you get three.

Boy, I related to this SO HARD. Especially the bit about magic items sitting unused in your inventory. I have a DM who loves coming up with complicated homebrew stuff. In one campaign, he thought my monk was under-performing, so he came up with this magic robe that was supposed to fix all my problems. I took one look at the multi-paragraph description, and handed the sheet right back to him. "Dude, I will NEVER use this."

Speaking of potions! What bothers me is that there's no "action downgrading" either. So in D&D 5.5, since it's a bonus action, you rules-as-written can't use an Action to do so! So if you're using your bonus action, which is supposed to be something small and easy, you can't use the "bigger" Action to do so instead?! Back in D&D 4e, we had a meme in my group: "I double-run-swim-crawl" due to the absolute absurdity of movement rules. Moving twice, but prone, but UNDERWATER...how do I calculate this?! 🤠

Great Video, thank you all! I want to point out: 52:30 ABSOLUTELY make sure that all players are ok with this. Think about what OpenAI (The company creating ChatGPT) could use your 2-4-6 hour audio session for. Read about how OpenAI uses data. At the very least, click on your profile picture in the upper right-hand corner > Settings > Data Controls > Model Improvement and toggle that off.

Hi as a suggestion, next time instead of using AI artwork, you can go on google and find images drawn by real people. Then just either put in the corner of the image the short reference to the image, or at the end of the video. It is better for real artists that way. The rest of your video was pretty good though!

The loot fairy is such a good idea. I think that it would even be better to have it as a sidekick in charge of the "shopping", that has really good bartering skills but is kinda clumsy, so maybe you ask her to go buy a Giant's Strenght Belt and she comes back with a Giant Belt instead.

I really sympathise with the feeling of losing alignment with a creator or a system if the vision changes halfway through. Theres been plenty of playtests that i was super hyped for originally, but they became something that i couldn't gel with over time. It does feel a little weird to use the word 'respect' for it. I mean i still respect the work and the people (unless they have done something truly abhorrent), but yeah. It's just a divergence of something that felt shared. A distance that becomes too far to make the jump again
