Your compost bins look great. Just to let you know that you can save yourself a lot of work by not turning the compost from one bin to another. I have the same setup and I used to turn them but it was back breaking work. Now I fill the first bin in year 1, and then let it compost till year 3. In year 2 I fill the next bin and let it compost till year 4. In year 3 after I have filled the last bin, I dig out the first. Because I don't chop my garden refuse, the larger pieces may not be completely composted so I throw them on top of bin 2 to cook for another year. It has saved me a lot of work and most of the compost cooks just as fast.

I'm so lucky my cats never bother my seedlings! I've never covered my plants.. for years.. and never have they gone for them. I'm glad since I'm so lazy hahah

I’m loving your content - thanks so much! I’m in zone 5b-ish, but JUST starting this journey. Do the grow lights stay on all the time, or are they on a timer?
@thehobbyhomestead4 күн бұрын
Thanks so much!! The lights are on a timer. I have them on for 16 or 18 hours a day (I can't remember now...).

Use RO or distilled water in your humidifiers, they will last longer and none of that build up.
@thehobbyhomestead23 күн бұрын
I would, but there's a cost and extra plastic use involved. If I were to plug in a humidifier for a couple of days when someone is sick, it would probably make sense to use distilled. With it running constantly in the tent for the mushrooms, I can't justify the cost!

I feel (personally) that making content that is necessary for survival (such as how to grow food) shouldn't be charged for, simply because there are too many people who, as you mentioned, are in need. Some people who may have things to add to the conversation may never see said conversation if it's hidden behind a paywall, and we lose out on communal knowledge and community in that way. I do understand the paradox, and I think it also depends on what you need as a person and the financial position you're in. I personally do run a business, but I donate all of the money (that isn't going back into cost to produce) to charities and groups I believe in, that are doing boots on ground work I cannot do. I am fortunate in that I have a day job that pays me very well, and it is a luxury that I can give my "side hustle" money away like that. I dunno, I feel like I am rambling at this point. But you asked, so that's my (not well formed) opinion on the matter.

I appreciate your thoughtful response!! I was at a conference this week for small scale farmers, and it was incredible to hear how many of them are simultaneously struggling to keep a roof over their heads and coming up with new ways to give back to the community through free food or land sharing. It's inspiring.

Totally agree with you. I think we should start with schools, it should be mandatory for students to take crop and animal husbandry through their elementary and school ages.
@DennisD-yv4ysАй бұрын
Suppose you went to elementary schools were new community gardens were set up to create an enriched environment setting! Then working part time in that area would be admirable! Specially where a higher level of competence would be recommended 🤔 not like its uncommon for other hobbyist to sell there creations...

Cool what zone are you in? I'm Canadian too😊 trying anything new next year ? I'm planning sweet potatoes, ginger,tumeric!
@thehobbyhomesteadАй бұрын
Hi! I'm in what was historically zone 5b, but some maps are now charting us as 6a. Wellington County. Where in Canada are you?? Sweet potatoes and ginger have both been really rewarding crops, in my experience! I haven't grown tumeric yet, but I bet it's a lot like ginger to grow! My new thing planned for 2025 is a large row of potatoes in the Ruth Stout method, and possibly some corn. I quit trying to grow corn in the city years ago because squirrels would steal every ear, but I think I'm ready to give some space to it again. Happy growing!
@DennisD-yv4ysАй бұрын
@thehobbyhomestead I'm in simcoe county! Same zone probably...yep them pesky squirrels got my corns too😕 I'll try another patch anyways

Good luck! I know that when I applied it last year, the gummosis (orange gel) disappeared completely and the tree produced a really healthy crop of fruit. The gummosis reappeared this fall, but I don't expect anything to CURE the tree - just help keep it alive :)

I've heard some people have finicky rhubarb! Did you plant it in rich soil? My mom inherited rhubarb at her new place, planted in absolutely nutrient-devoid soil, and despite probably being a decade old, was soooo small and sickly looking.

I moved my rhubarb when I moved into this new place and it came back tiny the next year and never came back. whoops lol

Amy! I absolutely loved this!! I have never seen a rivet gun before and I love how easy the whole process appears with it! We have two new steel beds and I'm tempted to consider this for a future project! We did the hoop thing before on wooden raised beds, but used extra conduit as the middle support brace... Sadly when faced against snow it just wasn't strong enough. I would definitely be attempting wood next time like you have done as it looks so much stronger! annnnd can I just shout out your wife's hoodie? Canadian House Hippo's... beyond epic. Can't wait for more videos!

When you plant, lay all your cloves out on the soil where you think you will plant and then just look at them. Move some closer or farther from each other. Sight down the rows and make them straight. Get them where you think they should go, because it is easy to make adjustments now. Then plant them where they are. No strings, no guessing.

Is there a reason you put it in the raised beds instead of the food forest? Just wondering. Thanks for the video!
@thehobbyhomestead2 ай бұрын
Great question. I tend to plant a few cloves in the food forest, too, just to diversify the planting. The food forest has Egyptian walking onions and some Sicilian honey garlic planted that are perenialized. The main reason I plant my culinary garlic in the raised bed is to make it easier to cover it with insect netting to keep the leek moths out! They're a real pest here.
