Here are some earth-friendly tips to keep our home healthy: 1. Buy less plastic products and switch to paper, glass or metal. Plastic not only never breaks down and continues to pollute our oceans and our land, but it has been proven to be harmful for our health if we keep eating or drinking out of plastic containers. Buy your groceries without the plastic wrapping or plastic containers. Take your own bags to the grocery store or ask the cashier to use paper bags. 2. Ride the bus, ride your bike or carpool whenever possible to save on gas AND to cause less pollution. 3. Save water by taking shorter showers, turning off the faucet when doing dishes or brushing your teeth, and learn how to collect rainwater to water your garden. Make sure to turn off your sprinklers on rainy days. 4. Build a garden in your front or backyard to grow your own food, to create better air quality, to bring beneficial insects and to add beauty to your home. You’ll save some money too! 5. Turn off lights when you leave a room and cut down on the electricity bill by using less of your AC or heater. 6. Invest in solar power and utilize the city rebate programs to help you in buying solar panels for your home. 7. Recycle, Reuse, and Repair things you already have at home. The list can go on, but these are some simple things to help care for our planet. Challenge yourself to do at least a few of the listed items every day. To find out more information on ways to save the environment please visit the city website in the comments section. www.austintexas.gov/blog/celebrate-earth-month-office-sustainability-earth-month-challenge
