Very interesting. I read about this condition in an Oliver Sacks book. It sounded like a hellish nightmare in the book but this guy seems a lot more well-adjusted, even if it has taken 25 years. Nice inclusion of Moondog in the beginning too.

Ah, yes, a truly insightful and immensely intelligent brother physician. I had joy of knowing and meeting him only by way of a letter and his wonderful handwritten response. That directed, initiated and seeded my continuing study of behavior and the intricacies of optimal healing... Thank you dear Doc Hans

After a brain injury a decade ago, I suffered from a mild version of this called sensory ataxia. To this day people do not understand why I move through space SO carefully. I tell them I have to concentrate on this extra level of coordination, which is why I fatigue quickly when doing complex movement activities. If I am too rushed or don't "aim first with my eyes" where I'm going, I become super clumsy and drop things, run into walls, etc. It's become second nature at this point and I recommend anyone who is compensating with their eyes to go to a neurooptometrist because sometimes prismatic lenses can help reduce the eye fatigue. Also, it's been my experience that neurologists tend to miss diagnosing less severe versions of this disorder because they don't make you close your eyes during the movement portions. If you suspect this is an issue, get tested with your eyes closed.

Absolutely insane. On the one hand you have chefs who enslave themselves to these "guides"... then you have a legend like Marco Pierre White who returned all 3 of his Michelin stars because he didn't think they were worthy of him, he thought he was being judged by people who had no idea how to cook

I guess your whole body feels like when you've slept on your arm and temporarily lost feeling in it. But you can still move it. Scary thought. Well maybe not the exact same thing, I suppose he still have the sense of touch. Weird.

So his proprioception essentially moved from an unconscious skill to a visible effort. That's incredible. I'm glad that he was able to retrain his brain!

I wouldn't say that it "moved" per se, he just compensates with other systems i.e. visual, vestibular

Is the loss of depth perception one of the ways proprioception affects you? Does it make you feel jerky when moving in certain ways? I have been told that I have drop wrist and foot but that I don't have any signs in the xrays or genetics. Could this also be a proprioception issue? I'm still confused about what this is exactly.

After a herniated disk surgery I now have proprioception in my lower leg and right foot, it's very strange. If I can't see my foot I have no idea where it is in space, almost like it's not mine. To drive I have to look down to be sure I'm pushing the correct pedal and use my hand on my knee to press down on the pedal with the correct amount of pressure. I often trip or do clumsy things like step on the dog or stub my toes constantly.
