Board game channels always shit on Azul. It's one of my favorite games. This is coming from someone who likes Splotter Spellen and Leder games. I love Azul because it can be a super chill, casual experience. But, it can be competitive and cut throat if you want to raise the stakes.

I love videos like this. Knowing what you like and don't like is important for us to understand your viewpoint. A lot of people trash Tom Vassal for his ratings of games, but he is also clear on what he likes and dislikes. I always watch at least 5 reviews of a game before I decide if it is something I really need.

One mans meat is another mans poison. BGG ratings are how popular the game is, not how good it is. My favorite game is ranked #27, my second # 6,329 and my third is not even ranked. . Another thing to consider is how old some of the ratings are. A lot of these games are not played as much now but are buoyed by very high older ratings. Also a lot of these games are gateway simple games. Gateway games keep selling.

love it. I think some will miss that you say Overrated, not that they are bad games, just overrated. Nice to hear someone just let go on some thoughts.

Mage knight is basically my number 1 game of all time, it's basically the game that bring me into the hobby. having said that you sir are absolutely correct about it having the worst rule book I've ever seen for a boardgame, and it's not just that the rule book is bad, being the complex game that it is there are several issues with no official explanation how one should actually play them. But non the less I would strongly recommend finding other ways to get the rules if crunchy brain melting games are your thing, which is not always the case. So yes, being in the top 100 list on BGG is probably overrating this game.

Top 10 overrated games . Surprised a lot, and spoiler, any of the HUGE amount of ameritrash with useless figures and full pack of big air boxes that all the same, dice rolling and dungeon crawlers. All the overrated games he mentioned are EU games. Hahahaha

Mage knight is amazing. Just watch some playthroughs. The rulebook is actually well written it’s just dense. But if you play the opening solo scenario you’ll see it’s pretty easy to internalize. That being said, wingspan sucks, subscribed

Really appreciate you putting your (somewhat unpopular and destined to garner negativity) opinions out there! There are people out there who will hate you for Zoolandering Mage Knight, but hey, that's definitely not a game for everyone, and it was worth a chuckle for sure :) I often wonder about the ratings systems and top 100 on BGG; when it comes to those parts of BGG I think it's crucial to remember that the people who will take the time to rate games are the ones the most invested in them, and that will lead to some weird biases toward or against certain types of games and may lead to some results that don't seem to make a lot of sense for your average board gamer (who, let's face it, probably will also not want to read the Mage Knight rule book).

100% agree with Azul. 7 wonder duel is a great game but I’m with you, 19 overall? Maybe 200th would be more accurate. I totally disagree Mage Knight is a masterpiece!

Some additional worker placement games to try if you can find them: Pixie queen -- this is a brutal game... If you end with a positive score you've done fantastic. Bonus points in life if you can do it without ruining friendships. The game hates you and the only way to succeed is to ensure others can't. Panthalos -- worker placement with an aspect of combat. T'zolkin -- the calendar wheels and delayed gratification is a cool, unusual mechanism Argent the Consortium -- good worker placement choices, but also notable for its theme

Return to dark tower is my favorite cooperative game. Nothing compares to the thematic experience it provides.

I buy just about any Shem Phillips game, review unseen. Paladins is generally considered the best West Kingdom game but I think Architects is the most fun and is a decent introduction to his designs.

My list: 1. Raiders of the North Sea - love the mechanic of placing a worker / removing a worker to trigger the action 2. Dune: Imperium - tight game; want to do everything but can't lol 3. Everdell - so good 4. Keyflower - one of the first games I bought; so many choices; tons of replayability 5. Francis Drake - are you gonna jump ahead to grab that space further along to get the better option, missing out on other things? such decisions!

I haven't played a lot of worker placement even if I think it is one of my favorite mechanic. I would say Dune: Imperium for what I have played is my favorite. I am really looking forward to play Agricola and Le Havre when I get the chance.

Anachrony's worker placement mechanisms are my favourites. 5 different worker types plus the requirement to use exosuits for some locations makes the placement choices very crunchy.

great list! love most of these games, especially Dune :D but i disagree with Tuscany as a "must buy" to enjoy Viticulture. When you add the expansion you increase the lenght of the game and reduce the interaction of the game. I love Viticulture and i thought that something was wrong with me when i played Tuscany and i didn't like it, but now as a more "mature" gamer i realize that i prefer the excruciating decisions of base game which is a fantastic experience with the exact lenght and complexity that it needs to be. (Also hot take but the more i play games the more i realize that 95% of boardgames expansions are highly unnecesary, just play base guys lol) I'll wait for a reprint for le Havre! seems really fun

Favorite Le Havre player count? 5 seems like too many for this game. Also, I’m obsessed with The White Castle.

Quantum is one of the most underrated games period. Each player’s faction starts the same. As you increase research and conquest your factions become more aggressive or stealthy or brave or… The ships as dice though is the truly brilliant piece of design here. Each face of a die is a different ship with a different once per round ability. The faster the ship the less armament. Combing those abilities is where the game takes really takes off. Can’t recommend it enough.

Deckbuilding is my favorite mechanic in fact i own almost all the games you mention and my favorite game of all time is ofc Dune imperium in all the declinations, i would also add concordia venus and Clank catacombs too

We got the Ark Nova map pack and Marine Worlds there too 😂 Our favorite thing about Marine Worlds is the new action cards. I think having a few that are more powerful really helps you start faster.

Dominion was one of my intro games, so it will always have a special place in my gaming heart. Also love Dune Imperium, and I finally learned Clank! last week. I haven't really played that many deck builders 😢 I just taught my 8 year old nephew his first deck building game, Summer Camp. While super simple, I think it's a good intro for young kids.

Some of my favorite deckbuilders: Endless Winter & Clank! Soo much more than a deckbuilder, but it contains the element as over multiple games you get more cards to build your deck: Etherfields.
