Lesbia was Catullus' girlfriend, whose real name was Clodia, and she was married to someone else, thus the pseudonym. But a real person she was.

Interesting and intriguing story of the writer's life. It varies though, but, in general, it's good

Strictly it is not quite Achilles 'girlfriend' that Agamemnon takes when he has to give up his own 'girlfriend'. The girls, Briseis and Chryseis, are both slaves who have no choice of which man they belong to. We are dealing with a distant time where values and customs were very different from ours. It was accepted and not seen as wrong (except to the victims, presumably) that in war when an enemy town is captured the men there are all killed, the town's wealth is looted and the women and girls treated as part of the loot, to be shared out among the conquerors as slaves. That is what had happened to Chryseis, who became the slave of Agamemnon, and Briseis, who was enslaved by Achilles. This must have been traumatic for her initially, as later in the Iliad she says that in conquering her city Achilles had killed her husband and brothers. However, Achilles seems to like Briseis and becomes attached to her, and it is clear she would rather be his slave than Agamemnon's, and even hopes Achilles may promote her to wife. Probably hard for us to imagine the emotions of a young woman in her situation. She would have been aware and perhaps resigned to the fact that in those days it was the normal fate of women such as herself on the losing side in war to become slaves of the victors. She may also not have been immune from admiration of Achilles as a mighty warrior hero. It was likewise accepted that a master had the right to require his slave women to have sex with him. The Greek warriors are men and have been away at the war for 9 years by this stage, away from their own women all that time. There must be an awful lot of pent up lust and sexual frustration in the Greek army, therefore. Hence, in part, Thersites' grievance about Agamemnon keeping most of the captured girls for himself and Nestor's promise to the Greek army that if they persevere and capture Troy, every Greek warrior will get as his reward a Trojan's wife to go to bed with. Pity whatever Trojan wife becomes the slave of the ugly Thersites and has to go to bed with him. In this video, the dark haired man with the glasses, when he speaks the part of Thersites in a silly voice, is annoying and hard to make out the words.

Yes, thank you for this context! It is our intention to simplify for the modern reader, so we use modern terms like "girlfriend" as a simplification. But yes, simplifications--inherently--do cut out some details. This is a great explanation of cultural context! Thanks!

@@DareLeigh there’s different regions in the pokemon world and most of the pokemon games covers a different region that introduces new pokemon. The order in which the games/regions came out is how the generations are numbered . Red/Blue/(Green) are the first games and are in the Kanto region , making them Gen 1. Pokemon Yellow is also a Gen 1 game in Kanto, but came out later. The next games Gold/Silver/Crystal are in a new region, Johto, and have the Gen 2 pokemon. And so and so forth until we get to Gen 8 with the most recent pokemon games.

@11:20 Quick correction: I don't know how I got the idea that "red herring" literally came from a Sherlock Holmes story. The phrase was instead from another writer, William Cobbett, who wrote a story about how hunting dogs were deceived off the trail by the smell of a red herring dragged along the ground. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_herring) Holmes stories DID use a lot of red herrings, though!
