Yes, you can: make a single knot that forms a loop on one side. Then pull the bow through that loop and tighten the knot. Silk is slippery, so the knot will not stay as securely in place as when you use a scarf ring (but you can always re-tighten the knot throughout the day).

This knot originates from China (as one of the eleven basic knots in traditional Chinese knotting). It was invented several hundred years before cowboys started riding the prairies :)

In theory, you could apply the same techniques to skinny scarves. However, the results won't have the same body as if you start with a square scarf. For that reason, I wear the few oblong scarves I have just as they are. You could try investing in a square scarf (doesn't have to be Hermes) to explore the differences. Best of luck!
