Didn't know there's trout in Niagara River. It's official then.... niagara area has everything. The river has huge salmon and trout, walleye, bass. Lake erie has fookin giant muskie!! Even sturgeon! Also catfish and carps. Steelhead, lake trout. But locals dont want to eat niagara fish, so fishin here is not extremely popular. It should be though, damn, we got it all.

I live in Niagara Co (NY) and fish the Lower Niagara often, have caught dozens of steelhead/browns/lakers out of the Lower over the years. Double-bead set ups are money on that river, or a bead w/jig combo. Good call on the white minnow swim jigs, that's a staple bait used by most anglers who fish the Lower over the Winter months. That hike back up those stairs is something, isn't it?

(Asking this question as a fly fishing newbie): how come you set with your rod instead of a strip set?
@Ben.Niesen7 ай бұрын
What’s up Preston! So in this video I am using a “centerpin reel” and it looks very similar to a fly reel but has a different function. My centerpin reel is spooled with monofilament line and spins freely so that the rivers current can naturally take my bobber and bait presentation down river. That is why my reel is spinning a lot of the time. I use my rod to set the hook because the rod I’m using is 13’ long and has a moderate fast action. So when my float goes down and is very far from me the length and action of that rod allows me to set the hook on fish even when they are very far away. Thank you for watching brother!

Where’s a good place to start when figuring out what to cast? Not that good at fishing
@Ben.Niesen8 ай бұрын
These fish in particular are steelhead trout and if I had to choose a good place to start for a bait or lure to cast for steelhead I would choose any bait that is imitating trout/salmon eggs or using real trout/salmon eggs. Because steelhead love to eat eggs, so using trout/salmon eggs would give you a great chance of hooking into a steelhead! Tight lines🙌
