First heard this in 1992 as the intro to - wait for it - a documentary about the Falklands War. I later found it again in Lord Kenneth Clark's 1969 'Civilisation' documentary series, opening the final episode, 'Heroic Materialism' over aerial images of then-present day New York - they matched the furious energy of the first movement. Clark and Walton were neighbours on the island of Ischia - Clark's admiration for Walton's music even survived Walton having an affair with Clark's wife!

Working on this piece currently and have been having difficulty with these meter changes (granted I just started) and here you are conducting it by memory. Extremely impressive. How did you manage this? Amazing.

One of my favourite pieces, I love the arrangement with the whole orchestra so it’s such a shame it’s hard to find a recording that plays the first movement with more than just woodwind - glad for this

Love the choice of tempo! 😍 Most renditions have been too slow for my taste but this worked brilliantly. The only thing that threw me off (apart from the missing second movement) is the seating arrangement. Like why are the French horns sitting next to the flutes? 🤨🤔

화려한 쇼맨쉽이 없어도 과장된 퍼포먼스가 없어도, 음색만으로 사로잡는 이것이 바로 진정한 음악이 아닐까

On many occasions music is like fireworks; it is very entertaining while it is going on and then you are left with nothing. This is a busy piece that did not intrigue my mind or touch my heart, but it was impressive in a technical sort of way. Of course, that's just me. I'm sure you loved it.

Spend a moment and pay attention to this performance, one of the currently best conductors in the world conducting one of the best orchestras in the world on arguably the best Symphony of the of the 20th Century. William Walton 1st Symphony, Goteborg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Shelley conducting. Phenomenal!

Dear Conductor, Hope this message finds you well. I will be talking for myself and all my friends that join me at the NAC concerts. We wanted to share our thoughts about the pre-concert talk. While we appreciate the effort, after a long day of work, many of us would prefer to simply enjoy the music at 8 pm. Perhaps the comments could be distributed online or with brochures? Thank you for considering our feedback. Sincerely, A devoted guest of your great concerts.
