Thank you so much for these vital conversations. I feel compelled to add that the best of human nature is not always elicited by extreme crises. Looking at the examples of Hurricane Katrina, human beings made the decisions to put survivors in outdoor cages without due process or accountability. Human beings spread disinformation on media, which lead to destructive decisions, including those of bus drivers who refused to enter the city to accept rescues because they were fed propaganda that violence there was rampant. Humans fired on unarmed civilians who were trapped on a bridge, and they killed people doing nothing but searching for baby supplies. Humans used police to prohibit people fleeing the 9th Ward from entering their drier suburban areas. When people are afraid, some give in, they side with the oppressors. I recall the explosion of hate crimes against Muslim people in the US and abroad following the attack on the Twin Towers. The lies stated at the UN that lead to the deaths of thousands of Iraqis and others. Why is it important to acknowledge this? Because, I think, we need to balance hope with realistic perceptions and realistic perceptions with hope. As Fred Rogers said, look for the helpers. As he didn't say, because he was talking to young children, remember that there are people who are geared to causing harm.

Thank you for this. I began my practice more than 25 years ago and about 12 years ago or so it fell by the wayside. I have returned to it since the election. It feels like the best thing I can do right now. I appreciate the community…

<"When people worry about crime when it is low, an economy when it is thriving and immigrants when they do much of the hard work that sustains that economy and commit fewer crimes than the native-born, the media has failed to reach them." >- and there you have the problem, contained neatly in one elongated sentence. As long as you push that delusional narrative, the media will always fail to reach them. Academics think they can bundle everything up into one easy to consume package, often using the semantics of fellow academics and elitists, in order to take the moral high ground. But they often fail to do the groundwork and actually test their theories on the ground. The dismissive nature of this whimsical sentence, completely detached from the reality that 'real' people doing 'real' jobs experience on a daily basis, exemplifies the disconnect. But the words used look good to those who share the same groupthink worldview, devoid of any critical thinking. Ooops indeed.

Grateful that you have chosen to wear the hat of Sensei alongside the many other hats. I learned about hungry ghosts two decades ago in a powerful Dharma teaching. And two decades from now, I will be recalling your teaching this evening.

Thank you Sensei Monshin. I did find you on KZbin randomly. After watching a lot of Thich Nhat Hanh lectures I noticed Upaya having a live ceremony and I began to passively watch it. I happen to get up and walk across the room just at the moment of the chant calling out to all Buddhas throughout space and time and it stopped me in my tracks. I am now enjoying sitting in zen daily and have connected to a local zen centre. Thank you for your continued inspiration 🙏 ❤😊

While reading the book, AWE by Dacher Keltner, under a heading "Death," I discovered Upaya and Roshi Halifax...so, I searched for the FB/KZbin, and was led to this video. It truly touches my heart as a person who embrace the dreams of a soul child beyond professional successes. (as a naturalized citizen from Korea (my father was a MD/PhD, I totally understand how you have traveled toward your spiritual calling). As I am entering to my 3rd stage of life at 77, what I have done and lived are no longer relevant. Death has approached me with new faces...a touching video that speaks to me deeply this morning. Thank you!
