At 1:22 there used to be some concrete tank traps constructed in WW2 to the left of the line and I wonder if they're still there in the undergrowth.

Not familiar with the area but that quarry site is a mess. If it's no longer needed for ballast production,it should be put to use for housing . Maybe the local MP should be consulted for his views. Alternatively address the perpetual argument for a southerly extension.

Great shame this line closed. amazing how overgrown old railways become. The colour film on here from 1975 is well worth watching.

I’ve travelled on this section of line in the late 2000’s up to the Meldon Viaduct halt in a Thumper. The line is now owned by Network Rail. They could have reinstated this line down to Tavistock and Plymouth by now at a fraction of the cost that’s been wasted on HS2, including the replacement of the viaduct. This would have been a boon to the communities that have been cut off from decent transport links since the line was closed, especially when you see how successful the reopening on the line to Okehampton has been.

Shame it hasn't been turned into an official cycle route. A couple of years ago, it was virtually impossible to cycle through, due to the condition of the track bed.

Certainly shows off the future of Heritage Rail recovery by keeping the footpath beside the line, whether or not it's the second trackbed, delivering to "Access for All". Thanks for the update.

Presumably this line would originally have been double-tracked, with the 2nd line where the foot/cycle path now sits ?

If you follow the link to the blog page you will see under every 360 image a link back to the track arrangement in the early 1900’s. Yes it was double track. In many places the current path is over the track.

They will clear the infill in time. Tbh with the waste that was illegally dumped there in the early 1970s, it should be cleared at the governments expense. It's been polluting the local area since then with the strange coloured water seeping out! Known to be toxic and polluting and should never have been dumped there! Once it is cleared the way is open to relay to Chilcompton. Same goes for the other way to Radstock, once Silver Street is bridged again(which it is planned to). This little acorn line will be a mighty oak in time. Well done to all involved in bringing back part of the S&D, that, let's face it, no one ever thought they would see again!!

Could you not find a way to go under Silver St which would give you a fairly unfettered run all the way to Radstock? A shame the NSR plans failed as more serious cases could be made to run into Radstock, securing funding to dig a small tunnel under the roundabout and connect directly to the Frome line which is just rotting away abandoned.

I can remember watching in amazment as class 37's loco's thundering through Cross inn over that bridge must be 30 plus years ago now. Haven't been up here for a number of years but what strikes me is how urbanised and bland that tarmac footpath and the whole area has become from what once was on the whole simple beautiful countryside. That footpath (cycleway secondary) looks very dangerous for walkers especially the elderly or partially blind or deaf and animals to. Luckily under the new highway code the principle duty and responsibility is on the cyclist to pass safely giving way to pedestrians in the process.

Should have kept it open, used it as a preserved railway enterprise with steam and diesel, and built the regenerated area around it. Again, as with UK railways, an opportunity lost. Thankfully the majority of rails remain and it wouldn't take much to return. One day, hopefully.

Loved the video, well done. I used to go to Folkestone every summer for a day out. Remember the harbour station although never used it. Moved to Norfolk in 1980 so lost touch. Didn't the station burn down in a fire? I agree the station should have stayed open, the other stations are a fair way off.

I remember taking the Sealink ferry from here in the early 1970's. Folkestone's heyday though for me was as a child in the 1960's, staying in a wonderful villa house in Earls Avenue and going to the permanent fun-fair and boating pool. What a shame all that vibrant life and character has been erased. People visiting today would have no comprehension of how amazing it was in comparison to now.

It isn't demolished. It has been renovated. Well worth a visit. It will never be a ferry terminal again as both the access to the port and water depth are inadequate for modern cross channel ferries.
