I keep my tanks outside but yea algae goes crazy . I live in AZ so honestly the good thing I don’t got buy heater I. The summer time because the sun is so hot here so my tanks on average are at 85 degrees but I had one time were it went up to 90 and I had to buy hang on fans for the tank to cool the water down. It’s perfect to keep cichlids that like warm water. Algae does suck though I had to cover my tank with some black covers on the sides and front .

How many keyholes are acceptable for a 30g community with small tetras, cories and is heavily planted?

You might be able to do a pair or a small group to start. Once they get full grown I wouldn't keep them in anything smaller than a 40g, as shown here. You might have different experience but in this size tank my group are to outgoing and territorial to keep tetras in the same tank. If I had them in a 75g it would probably work. I did have some red eye monk tetras in with them for a while and they just got too stressed out and I had to remove them. They dont mess with my pleco and catfish though.

How long did it take for the keyholes to get as big as the ones you have? I have two and it seems like they grow so slow.

I am trying to think back to when I first got them. If I remember correctly, these are a little over a year old at this point. I wasn't trying to power grow them so you can probably get them bigger faster.

This is definitely some of the best advice on keeping West African cichlids out there on KZbin. I totally agree with Alex, go out there and buy the books, read them and learn. The Internet is great for certain things but it is rife with information that is misleading and is open to hacking and alterations. Books are a great source of information which should be the foundation of your knowledge.

Not sure I remember the exact food, it could be a northfin or Xtreme wafer as I feed those pretty regularly around my fish room. I feed these guys a varied omnivorous diet. They will eat pretty much anything.

I have a plant filled 75g with 4 keyholes all adults and never have they eaten the plants perhaps hunger drives them too do this ? I really dont think this video does the keyholes justice 😢😢😢

I’ve got baby keyholes! I’ve had them about 6 weeks and they’re all about 1.5 inches long. Do you remember how long it took for yours to reach full size?

Long time. Been a year or so since I got mine as babies and the male is just now nearly full grown.

They do fine on any color. I think their colors pop a bit more against a dark substrate. Sorry for the delayed response 😂

This is cool - It would be awesome to build a little roof that collects the run off and takes it down a pipe or gutter of some sort. I have 3 tanks outside and so far its doing well.

Thank you! The base layer was the same for both tanks, but the cap on the second consisted of a mixture of pool filter sand, a CaribSea “jungle river” sand, and pea gravel from Lowe’s

Very cool talk! I got into West African cichlids bc of a local master breeder in our area. He was kind enough to trade some fish with me. I now have lake turkana jewels, steatocranus, and tons of kribensis ☺️

What is the best way to get rid of cloudy eyes on cichlids I tried salt treatment, melafix, changing water every other day. I even tried Seachem Kanaplex, the cloud eyes is not disappearing.

Our one large male flares at everyone, for some reason! And yes, we have two (possibly three, to be determined) pairs
