I can't use bare steel. I lift in a building behind the house and bare steel would be too hard to deal with. I looked at the croc dumbbell handles and did I see that right $175 for the pair. I want a good pair of short dumbbell handles, the regular handles are entirely too big and long and you can't even curl with them but the short ones are for curls and shoulder work. I bought a $150 bench from amazon. Worst and only mistake I made in my budget gym. Benching is fine, but movements where I'm pulling load horizontally like cable rows or presses, the bench drags. It's a nightmare. I was completely short sighted and only thinking of benching when I bought it. You want a *heavy duty* bench. Something that weights enough and with no slack.

Philosophically I prefer the barbell and plates option but this challenge to me is a to create a build for someone who’s getting started and I prefer Jonathan’s basic approach if I were just getting started. I would likely grab the Crandall Fitness Adjustable Bench, then I would build slowly over time to get the BoS barbell, rack and plates.

Wow! You both did a great job! I think what it really boils down to is what you enjoy using the most. Really good tip on Extreme Fitness Equipment. I bought my plates from them and was able to drive to their warehouse to pick them up. I would have forgone the Rogue equipment. Instead I would just use a tennis ball for the landmine on my barbell, get a rope from Target and belt at my local sporting goods or on Amazon. That would have saved some money. Also I would just have gotten maybe a set of 45s as bumpers. The rest of the plates can just be iron ones, much cheaper and with the 45s on the height will be right for your deadlifts. That set up works well as long as you don’t drop the bar when you lift. And let’s face it. NOBODY ever stops adding equipment!

Good options in your video. Subscribed! FYI, Amazon has CAP budget bumper plates for 88 cents per pound (45's) and Signature Fitness cast iron for $1.11 per pound (45's). I did buy some cast iron, they're great for the price but nowhere near the quality of my Rogue deep dish plates. Haven't bought any of the CAP bumpers but I might. I have some Fringe Sport bumper plates on the way now but may grab a couple of the CAP due to the price. Both builds look good and would work for most people. As a beginning lifter I started with adjustable dumbbells and a homemade bench as that is what I could afford, then just put the money I would have used on a gym membership into new equipment. Now have a rack, weights and several bars. Given the choice between dumbbells or a barbell and rack, I think the rack is just more fun and easier to continue to build on as you gain strength, so I have to give this one to Brimhall Barbell Club.
