Moving to Austin? Get ready for an adventure! Sure, traffic can be wild-Loop 1 and I-35 have their moments-but the city is full of gems that make it all worth it. From the scenic toll roads that give you a break from the hustle, to the vibrant energy of protests near the Capitol (it’s the spirit of Austin!), there’s never a dull moment. Embrace the journey, find your favorite shortcuts, and discover why everyone’s flocking to this incredible city! 🎉

One thing I noticed right away is how poor traffic management is. The roads are not designed to flow very well. Not enough turn off lanes and straight through lanes suddenly become a turning lane which forces you to merge. They need to hire a traffic engineer to redesign/remodel all the roads.

I like this video. Good answers. Had a chance to move to Austin (i alone make over 275k a year) but decided not for me. Moved to SD area instead. More bang for my buck. Still, not a bad spot if you're only going to be there for a few years and don't mind potentially losing house value/lower wage

We have been seeing prices steadily decrease in the past few months which is great for buyers. But if interest rates continue to drop, that may change and prices may shoot back up due to an increase in buyers shopping. Right now there are deals to be found!

They’re down 8%-10% and trending downward towards 15% price reductions since the recent peak in 2022-2023, then it will probably start picking up again.

I lived there from 75 to 2023. Here is my take: 1. If you are not gay or a frothing at the mouth progressive liberal, you can expect to have no political representation. Don't waste your time voting. 2. The City council removed the homeless camping ban in 2016. There are in excess of 10K people camping in the woods and under the bridges in town. They like to start fires and they like sharp, pointy objects and using them on the productive citizens. 3. "Project Connect" was a $7 billion dollar boondoggle that 26 year olds living on mommy and daddy's monthly checks, in the downtown area, voted for. It made traffic worse by shutting down trafic lanes to create "lanes for the unemployed" (bicyclists). Fee free to put on that suit or dress and ride your bike to work on the 95 degree day that occurs 9 months out of the year. 4. Crime- your car will be broken into. Your mailbox will be broken into. If you leave your house for more than a week, people will move into it. Just sayin'

I’ve lived in Austin since 1978. It had grown from a weird socialist enclave to an over-hyped socialist boom-town devoid of the infrastructure you should expect in the tenth largest city in the U.S. Austin teems with local politicians who have successfully imported like-minded expatriates from the west coast and pacific northwest. Crime, traffic, homelessness, and over-taxation have been imported wholesale in ways only duplicated in cities like Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco. It ain’t all that. Austin is in a death-spiral. Sort of a retarded little brother of the failed west coast city of your choice…

Lived in Austin 1993-2021; city has become way over-crowded - older, favorite business locales have mostly folded and have given way to national chains; Austin has lost a lot of the luster. I lived and owned houses in central (Crestview, Allandale, Northwest Hills) but property taxes were soaring. Most people that can now afford to live in Austin proper are attorneys and tech/software engineers - yay! Normal people are stuck in Millwood cookie cutter homes, no tress, etc in Hutto, Pflugerville, Leander, Cedar Park, Elgin, which are not Austin.

This one is both a pro and con: the politics of Austin. If you are a Democrat, you will love the politics of Austin but you will despise the politics of Texas. If you are a Republican, you will loathe the politics of Austin, but you will love the politics of Texas. Austin, Texas is the San Francisco or Seattle or Los Angeles or Chicago of Texas. In other words, it is arguably the most liberal city of Texas. If you are a Republican living in Austin, I would recommend moving to another part of Texas if you can or want to. If you are a Democrat who is sick of the politics of Texas and cannot wait to move out, then move to a blue state or a purple state if you can afford it.

You don’t do the heat justice. People who are not from the state don’t understand what heat means until they get here. This is especially true of Californians. They think that because they’ve got all that desert over there and that they have places like death valley that they understand our heat. They don’t. They have no idea. They no dry heat. We have humid heat. Completely different animal. And it goes on and on and on from the end of May till the middle of September. And you forgot to tell them about that fault that runs through Austin. Very concerning to Californians. Especially when you tell them that Texas has absolutely no regulations to make buildings earthquake proof if that thing should become active. And it can come active. If there’s any fracking in the area, that’ll do it. It happened in Dallas.

The Taxs so high same with the Water and Power Bills . I lived there for 29 yrs b4 . Traffic is so bad . Its called MOPac not 130 . Metro rides was not there when i was there . Taxs for Property is 7 % and up . 30 days of 100% in the summer . Some Snow but not often . By the way I lived in Roundrock for the whole 29yrs . They build a new school every year . Is one of the reason the taxs are so high . Live Music is really good . Love the Food .

130 is a newish north/south toll road well east of downtown, and has little if any affect on local traffic. MOPAC (Loop 1, but nobody calls it that. built on a Missouri Pacific right of way.) also runs north/south, is older, and runs just west of downtown. Guess you weren't here when that happened. BTW, Round Rock politics are not Austin politics.
