i see heaps of the start is single track are there many passing loops? are the rails shared with freight?
@eddiehayes15239 ай бұрын
Is there any change of time stamps showing us where the train was when? In the description or something, I mean. I'm from Christchurch and I'm not really familiar with the route north of the Kapiti Coast or south of Rangiriri.

Is there any chance you could upload the entire video at its normal speed? I realize it would be 10 hours worth of file. Maybe you could do it as ten 1-hour instalments? I would love to see this at normal speed and I daresay many others would too.

Only 1 frame every 2 seconds, so the best your going to have to do is manually slow it down to a slideshow 😢
@sw6188 Жыл бұрын
@@awhesian I understand. Maybe if you do another video in the future and it is possible, record at normal speed. That way there will be a full length version and you can also speed it up for KZbin purposes. Cheers.

Excellent video, but wouldn’t it make sense to electrify the whole of the NIMT, so dual-voltage electric locomotives could be used and thus eliminating the use of diesel traction?
@sw6188 Жыл бұрын
It wouldn't take much to connect Pukekohe (which at the time of me typing this is having electrification extended to it from Papakura) to Hamilton. That would complete the system from Auckland to Palmerston North. Then it would just be a matter of electrifying between there and Waikanae and the entire NIMT would be electric. If the government is serious about reducing carbon emissions then it's a no brainer to extend the wires.

Not bad. It's just a bit too quick. Plus adding text as you pass through each town and city would have been a good idea. You could have also added some music to it but I'm well aware how difficult it is to find good music that fits a timelapse like this.

Some beautiful scenery there. What a shame that it doesn’t see much traffic anymore and investing on renewing the line between Masterton & Woodville wouldn’t be worth it. It would be a great route for another “bay express” service between Wellington and Hawkes bay (or Gisborne if they ever reconnect).
@danieleyre89132 жыл бұрын
hmm half of this video is between Wanganui and Palmerston North, yet the train seems to be going a lot faster. How long does it take the train to travel between Aramaho and Milson? It takes about 80-90 minutes to drive it.
@danieleyre89133 жыл бұрын
Some stunning scenery along that trip. I noticed the big slow-down across those viaducts though. What a crying shame that NZ’s railway network has become so run down and the passenger services have almost died-out. With a few millions of investment: Tourists could love that journey.

Dear Michael, Is there also a real-time cab ride along this route worth seeing? I would very much welcome it, as I was in New Zealand for a month in 1998 and still have fond memories of this particularly beautiful country! I think there would be a lot of spectators for this. As an example, take the route from Trondheim to Bodø in Norway, which is similar in length and takes almost 10 hours to travel. There are videos of this route in the four seasons spring, summer, autumn and winter! Here is the link for the trip in winter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6G5iJmwqMx_pbM Many greetings from Koenigstein im Taunus, Germany

A slowed train that did a maximum of 40 km/h. Between your first and second clips is the Maromaku Bank, responsible for stalling the old train. In the last couple weeks there was a breakdown on the bank and 2 locos were sent from Whangarei to rescue the train. I caught it just north of Towai and also shot video of the last train. Anthony

This line was closed down soon after this video was made. All the 'rattlers' (4 wheel rolling stock) was at the end of its life (50 y/o) and have since been cut up for scrap. I went up to Otiria many times with Kevin Bain and other drivers in 2000-2002. There was up to 4 trains per day and 1500-1800 ton was the usual train size. The line stops at Kauri, 13km north of Whangarei. Sad to see rail disappearing in most places.

Made the trip up there a week or two before services were withdrawn. Brilliant to photograph such a slow moving train as it wasn’t hard to catch it for another photo. Fair to say the line has had maintenance deferred for quite some time. Good one for me as I had never seen 4 wheelers in service before. I’m sure the northland people would quite like the logging trucks off their roads.

Sadly a line not used much anymore especially between Pahiatua and Masterton but I hear Kiwi Rail keeps it open in case anything major happens to the main trunk line between Wellington and Palmerston North. I can remember this line being very busy when the rail cars where common as passenger trains and when I was young we regularly rode on them.
@danieleyre89132 жыл бұрын
Seems odd how the railcars are long gone yet I saw about 4 coaches go past. I know that railway rolling stock is a lot more expensive to buy new than a coach. But they also have much lower running costs and longer lifespans and could get people between Wellington & Hawkes bay a lot quicker.

Nice one. I did the journey South on the Silver Star sleeper in 1975, returning North on the Silver Fern. Beautiful country. Is there any reason why the Auckland -Wellington trains do not use Britomart?
@michaelbennet91466 жыл бұрын
Mervyn Partin, apparently when all the Auckland trains were electrified the exhaust fans for removing diesel fumes in britomart were decommissioned.
@MervynPartin6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Michael, for your prompt reply which completely answers my query. I visited Britomart on my visit to New Zealand in 2016 and was quite impressed with it so it seems a pity that the few remaining trains to and from Wellington cannot use it. Perhaps Kiwi Rail should reconsider their de-electrification plans on the North Island Main Trunk line and instead wire up the whole route! Thanks again....Mervyn Partin
@michaelbennet91466 жыл бұрын
Mervyn Partin we've had a change of government here, so it looks like the main trunk will retain its electrification. Expansion however probably won't be on the cards for many years, although it appears that the Auckland wires may be stretched to Pukekohe
@MervynPartin6 жыл бұрын
Michael Bennet. That is good news. Over here in the UK, the electrification plans are in tatters! Regards, Mervyn
@Konkacha2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbennet9146 It boggles my mind how little electrification there is left to do on the NIMT yet how people drag their feet with the idea of finishing electrification. Glad to see the de-electrification plan fell apart though. There's plenty of dual voltage locomotives available (even second-hand) and having freight fully electric would save a ton of dosh.

where is the freight? no wonder every one uses trucks.
