That wasn't the tiniest bit useful. It could have been summed up in one sentence by saying cut it down and dig out the roots. Well, I have tried this method. I had THREE men doing the job in an area about the same size as what you show here, but there is still bramble popping up among the shrubs. I keep finding massive roots that can't be dug out by an old woman, so I'm not sure whether I can really have a proper garden at all.

How to make this kind of tree get fuller ?
@gardenerstale11 күн бұрын
Hello there, it does depend on why it has become sparse. Sometimes it needs a good feed (such as a mulch) and a water to give it the nutrients to put on more growth ( I would recommend lightly digging the soil before doing this if the soil is compacted). Another option would be to cut the branches back harder to the woodier structure of the tree to stimulate growth to help it fill in. Other more in depth variables that can affect this could be the climate so things like how much rain, sunlight and wind the tree gets which you can modify by creating wind breaks, shade screens, irrigation etc. Hope this helps 👍

Are the rootbarie also in the bottom or only on the sides
@crazidirtbiker24 күн бұрын
Only the sides
@gardenerstale2 күн бұрын
Hello, yes they are only on the sides of this one to prevent it becoming too root bound. If you have a more invasive variety then you can completely encapsulate the roots by putting a barrier at the bottom just remember it needs to allow water through it and you may need to feed the bamboo as the roots won't be able to grow far to search for nutrients. 👍
@carolrawsthorne765525 күн бұрын
Hi. If you are taking the height down, how far down do you go?
@gardenerstaleКүн бұрын
Hey Carol, it's very dependent upon your tree size how it's grown etc, but the idea is to leave enough branches above the crown of the tree to form structure and grow foliage to sustain the tree and grow fruit. On a large mature tree you can quite happily take off a couple meters of growth without any worry, whereas a smaller less prolific growing tree may only allow you to take off half a meter. Hope this helps 👍

Hello! If my newly planted shrubs are now 110 cm high and I want to build a hedge between them, which would be 200 cm, when should I prune them first? Should I wait until they reach the desired height and only then start pruning?
@gardenerstale27 күн бұрын
Hello, I would recommend pruning them when they become "leggy" when the tops or sides are thin and spindly. You want to only take a small amount off just clipping them. Then by pruning them back a small amount each year even though they are not tall it will help thicken them up and when it does become your desired end height it will be a thick bushy structurally sound hedge. Hope this helps 👍

My house I grew up in had i think one of the oldest bramleys In the uk. It was built on the orchard of Ruthin Castle. Used to find lots of clay pipes as a kid. I don’t know if it’s still there. Had to sadly sell due to divorce. Used to have 7 as a kid but I kept one and found this information. I know they were introduced only a certain number of hundred years back. Crop was giant 4-6” apples and 15+ big guerrilla tubs of apples off that tree. My dad was a market gardener and mobile shop in 60-90s. It makes sense with it connected to the castle etc. it was called Isgoed, Welsh, meaning low woods. I knew the builder of our house. He was an apprentice in 1928 then and remembered the orchard as his old barn workshop was attached and next to us. Im near 60 now btw. Just thought I’d throw this bit of info in lol. I hope new owners didn’t chop it flat. It would be such a shame.

Hello Rich what a fantastic story and bit of history thank you for sharing. Sounds like an amazing garden to grow up in I would love to see how those trees were cared for. Would be pretty amazing to get some cuttings from them and graft/ grow new trees from that old tree if it's still there. Its a shame nowadays fruit trees are not seen as valuable to have in a garden as they once were. I think some people are changing though and appreciating home grown apples and other fruits, it is a bit of work and effort but if you enjoy doing it, it becomes more of a hobby or lifestyle and not work. Thanks again for sharing 👍

Hello, thanks for sharing your story I think with bamboo it's very dependent on the variety and location to how vigorous they grow. I haven't found any problems with this and have been featuring this plant in yearly updates and will continue to do so, so will see how it develops. I have had experience with bamboo planted in an area for 15 years unmanaged and it kept to a small size equally bamboo planted in a different area for 2 years and has doubled in size so it really does vary. 👍

Hi there! I really like your bamboo videos! I saw your video when you planted this bamboo screen and would just like to ask if it has been well contained in the barrier that you put in or if it has tried to 'escape' it at all or if the barrier really does the job of restricting it to your side of the fence? There are lots of conflicting info around about bamboo and I am trying to learn from people that actually have practical experience with it - Many thanks in advance!
@gardenerstaleАй бұрын
Hello Deborah, thanks very much. It has been contained well and hasn't escaped at all if you are interested in an update have a look at my bamboo video where I reduce the height of this bamboo. I think by allowing enough space in the barrier for the bamboo to still grow it won't try to escape it will just guide the roots to stay in the barrier. In the future it may need to be split and new soil added to allow it to keep growing rather than it becoming "pot bound". I think the main thing with bamboo is getting the variety right for your location and choosing less invasive species. Hope this helps 😊👍

Best way to deal with the cuttings - a shreder. The resulting compost from all our shredding provides the growing medium for my hanging baskets which I hang, 2 per tree, out of the branches of the apple trees. It eliminates issues with slugs and snails too and adds a welcome 'extra' layer of colour to the garden. Lovely to get a reply. Thanks.

Wow ...at last someone working on a real mature tree. We have 10 x 90 year old trees this size and for the past twenty years I have pruned in the summer with an extra bit of spur pruning in the winter. I have now managed to produce fruiting branches much lower on the trees and my husband takes the height off the top in winter to keep them manageable and reduce the risk of me breaking my neck off the ladder when I do the top growth with the long pruners. I started to do this because it was such a cold job in January plus waiting for dry days when I wasn't working but was never quite sure I was doing the right thing. People kept telling me I would only produce more leafy growth. Now proven wrong! It's a nice job in July/August and I have now taken to some spur pruning at the same time because it is easier to see the ones that need to go. PS We inherited the trees when they were close on 40 years old so I felt brave enough to experiment on them. The apples are as scrummy as ever! 😁 Thanks for the video.
@gardenerstale2 ай бұрын
Hey Pauline thanks so much for the comment and your story that's lovely to hear. Thats fantastic to have that many old trees and sounds like you are doing everything right with them for your situation. I also like to take the height out to keep it manageable and encourage lower fruiting buds. Yes it doesn't produce more leafy growth if you catch it at the right time if too early absolutely you will get leafy growth. I sometimes do the same while you are up there you can do the odd thinning out of spurs as long as it's not too drastic, I show this in my newer summer apple pruning video it's well worth a watch if your interested. That's great to hear we can only learn if we experiment and try these things out. 😁👍

Hi when you used the root blocker fabric to plant new ones did you put it down to cover the front back and bottom? Or did you do it just to the front like the other one? What material did you use for the blocker? Thanks 😊
@gardenerstale2 ай бұрын
Hello, thanks for the comment, in this scenario I used the fabric along the front to prevent the bamboo encroaching onto the lawn. It doesn't spread backwards due to the foundations of the small garden wall as it is not a very invasive bamboo variety. In my "Bamboo Privacy Screen" video I use the fabric on the front and back of the bamboo and also go into more depth about the root barrier so it's worth a watch if you are interested. I believe in this video it was a rubber pond liner that I used as the barrier. Hope this helps 👍

I prune after bud open now. No more suckers. And apples are double sized now. Pruning in the winter is apeshit crazy. The tree has time to react and grows nothing but vegetative sprouts instead of fruit.
@gardenerstale2 ай бұрын
Hello, thanks for the comment on your experience. I am yet to try pruning at that time of year so will certainly experiment with that to see if it works with my trees. I usually go with a summer prune to prevent the excess vegetative growth however some circumstances do need a winter prune when they are very overgrown then a summer prune follow up afterwards which brings it back in to focus on fruiting growth. 👍

I have a garden that was taken over by brambles. Roots are very deep is there any spay that would kill the roots off before I start hacking the ground?
@gardenerstale2 ай бұрын
Hey Jasmine sorry to hear that they are very invasive once they get going. There certainly are lots of commercial sprays on the market that would kill the brambles down to the root although I am not a fan of chemical use. My advice would be if you are going down that route is to cut the brambles down to the ground then wait for them to re shoot so you are spraying their new leaves with the systemic weed killer and wear the appropriate PPE to prevent contact with you. 👍

Thanks for the comment really glad this helped you. Absolutely if you do it while it's dormant you can reduce the height dramatically. Make sure to keep the main branch structure so you can develop your spur network on them so the fruit is close to and can be held by the strong branches. I would recommend a follow up summer prune as after a hard prune you will get a lot of leafy growth and water shoots. I have two videos on summer pruning apple trees that may help you. 😁👍
