Hi, I believe they get them from a guy called Frank Ramspott. Check out his official website and iStock. Unfortunately there isn't a way to animate something like that in After Effects well, this might be more of a Blender thing.

I'll look at making a tutorial on that one :). if you want to stick something to the map you need to make it a 3D object then pickwhip it to the map anchor.

Haha that was a pretty funny intro. I got geolayers over a couple years ago and have made a bunch of map comps that I’ve only finalized to for my own watching but going to launch some videos next week. I just haven’t mastered AE well enough. I work in GIS and my enjoyment comes from making different base maps for geolayers using Maplibre or ESRI. I like Maptiler as a company watched a bunch of their Leaflet tutorials but IMHO that license fee isn’t worth it. There are open source ways to do the same thing. But it probably saves some people some time. But $25 a month is too much for that. But both companies I think are great and Geolayers really is a great application. Sorry for the long comment haha this is just my main hobby and no one I know personally knows what I am talking about with this stuff and I’m obsessed. 😅
@MapMotionStudio26 күн бұрын
How is it you get Maplibre or ESRI Maps into GeoLayers? That sounds interesting.
@atxmaps26 күн бұрын
@@MapMotionStudio Geolayers has field (I forget what screen) that you can enter an ESRI basemap URL for I think. I go a somewhat circuitous route where I use ESRI in Mapbox to create a style that I then use for Geolayers. I like working in Mapbox a lot. Now that you've called me out haha I can't remember how I used Maplibre in GL. In HTML you just call the URL for it at the top of the page. I will have to open Geolayers to see what I did previously.

another question, why can't I zoom in on a city with these types of maps? This could be a problem for me and I don't know how to solve it :(
@MapMotionStudioАй бұрын
Some of the satellite imagery in geolayers when you get too close it it just goes blank. I would suggest trying different satellite imagery (there's Bing and Esri) or scaling up the comp. Also if you go into the settings of the map comp you can change the max zoom setting. That may help.
@Sukhraj26 күн бұрын
@@MapMotionStudio thank you very much, I changed the zoom of the comp from 5 to 23 and it works, I didn't know that :D
@SukhrajАй бұрын
oh my goodness, finally someone who made this into a tutorial, thank you so much, very much appreciated. Another curiosity, as you know sometimes the Johnny Haris team uses a canvas pattern but I can't understand how they do it so well. I also always noticed in one of his videos WWII in the Pacific: Why Japan Lost at 0:15 second you can see how the style changes, in my opinion he started with the white background then they added various layers, but how?
@MapMotionStudioАй бұрын
Thanks, you're welcome. The canvas would have likely been done with a blend mode (perhaps multiply). for the transition between maps, when you create a second map comp in geolayers you can select the drop down called "link view" and link it to another comp so they show the same thing. he would have then just had two different map styles linked and use a luma matte of an ink splash to transition between the two.
@Sukhraj26 күн бұрын
@@MapMotionStudio aaa ok ok as I imagined, but this canvas to have such a close resolution when zoomed in must have a gigantic format
@MapMotionStudio26 күн бұрын
@@Sukhraj You can use a smaller texture and then the effect CC repetile with blended edges to expand it out. Worth only turning on before the final render as it can be quite a render intensive effect.

This was great. Does mapbox ever charge for this service and also can you theoretically share custom maps from mapbox with friends who have geolayers / or is there a repo anywhere of premade geolayer maps for inspiration? Thanks!
@MapMotionStudioАй бұрын
@@raybp7512 I think I there are some paid mapbox services but this technique is free. If you shared that URI key with a friend then they would be able to use the same map. I’m not aware of a list of URI keys online you can use. You can sometimes find stuff like that on GitHub. On my Google from in the description I have a list of map styles which you’re welcome to use.

What would you say are the limitations of 3D Earth Connections vs Geolayers 3?
@MapMotionStudioАй бұрын
GeoLayers is great for making any customized shape layer on the map. you could do this too in 3d earth connections but you would need to manually draw it out. Geolayers can do 3D and 2D maps whereas 3D Earth connections is just a globe.

Search in KZbin "boone loves video handycam". You could also do this without the handcam plugin and just do it using cameras within After Effects.
