As far as the antique value goes, I'm afraid that if you hadn't refinished it, it would be unusable, and therefore basically worthless. A QUALITY refinishing can save an antique piece and keep it in service for another century! The original finish only adds value if it's whole and intact, anyway, and this finish was not.

love it! i was so excited watching the puzzle come together. I think that missing panel had pins that fit into the holes and it just popped into place against that stop. Maybe a secret compartment for ones favourite drink?

Lovely work. Sadly, after three hundred years, that table is probably worth less than your bill for restoring it.

It is so comforting to make something on the lathe and match it to an already made piece. Good job, looks great and in proportion to the rest. Yes Thomas, "I think they look pretty good".

I appreciate your approach to repairs very much, but a 17th century table that has been repaired or repurposed so many times…why reuse the modern 16 penny nails? You frequently use much more original or period correct repairs on other pieces.

Great channel. I love your content. I appreciate that you share how much time it takes to restore each project as a gauge.for the devotion and effort poured into each piece. No one cares how long it took Davincci to paint the Mona Lisa.

@@johnsonrestoration I'm thinking a vertical shaft with hooks welded at shelf heights that all swing in together when the top of the shaft is pressed by the triggering shelf. Maybe a spring tension involved to rotate them back out when opened/unlocked.

Thomas, who am I to tell you about a technique but I turn wooden bowls and have some decent success with wipe on poyurethane. I apply it with paper towel and after about 5 or 6 coates ,sanding in between, I give them one light sand with a fine foam sanding pad and then one final wipe with poly. I wonder if you ever go through such a proceedure
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 22 сағат бұрын
Thanks Ronald! I don't have experience wit the wipe on poly. I wanted a built up finish on this wheel, but I will try the wipe on at some point

I have three concert harps. When receiving delivery of my mother's Lyon and Healy Style 22 (after WWII) I took hold of the shoulder only to find it completely broken. After the tears, I took it to a harp repair gentleman in Maastricht who rebuilt it...he said it was like a puzzle. There is still a 'scar' to remind me of that fateful accident. Apparently. the case fell backwards in transport. Thank you for repairing and giving love to musical instruments. Instruments of true magic.
