First of all thank you for all great videos. Just back from a week in Croatia and we used them a lot. Your advice about just going around and film everything really made a difference. I spent 10 minutes when we got the boat and managed to film a hole in the dingy that I didn't see at that point but when going back on the video we could show that the damaged was there already when taking out the boat. Great advice!

Hey Nic, thanks again for this great video tutorial. So I understand: main sail full out, we can keep tension on the in mast furler without switching to ratched, once we have reefed the main sail, we need to switch to ratched an keep it - right? CAN we reef in the main sail in with ratched or do we need to open it again?
@45DegreesSailing
@45DegreesSailing 9 күн бұрын
Yup that’s right. If you are going from nothing to full main no need to touch the mast. Full main hold on the luff/breadline in the main. She deeded switch to ratchet. Or. Once full main is out. If you think you might need to reef. Then go to ratchet. You can then reef without having to go to mast at all 😊

@@45DegreesSailing Am I right thinking that with twin rudder you'd be able to focus less on the helm while you're trying to pivot the boat using stern lines, until you have enough speed for steerage? Also, what would change if you'd need to "depart" into the wind (to starboard in your case)?
@45DegreesSailing
@45DegreesSailing 9 күн бұрын
@@LukaBendzo Hey Luka great questions. Basically single or twin rudder you can centre the helm and not worry about it while you are on control lines. If I had to go to windward I would still plan to turn with the wind (when in a confined space) as you cannot beat the wind. So go with the wind as discussed in the video, then reverse in control into the wind until you have space to turn around.

With these marine engines for sailing boats generally it is just the same engine but with a turbocharger bolted onto the air intake. Usually the standard engine is naturally aspirated and the upgrade is the turbo that bumps the power by about 30hp. Mind you this is not always the case and sometimes the engines do need to be reworked to accommodate the forced air injection

nice video......I see some people cross their stern lines. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to doing this?
@45DegreesSailing
@45DegreesSailing 16 күн бұрын
Definitely an advantage in some situations. Though to be clear the crossed lines are the springs (stern springs). They still have (or in my opinion should have) stern lines coming out straight or angled a little out of possible the spring lines crossed over keep the boat in steady position when there is a strong cross wind or current. Reduces the amount of ‘snatch’ or jarring when the lines take tension. It’s not easy to do on all boats as the cleats may not be positioned so well to be capable of rigging cross springs.

I've been in a waterspout on a Beneteau clipper 423 in 2014. Had my father not been the absolute best captain I ever saw, I probably wouldn't have made it out alive to tell the tale had it not been for his skill and knowledge. People don't believe me when I tell them that the waterspout pushed us from the blue lagoon on Drvenik almost all the way out to Split in 15 minutes. He had a mistral NW wind and were sailing from Trogir to the blue lagoon on Drvenik. We aproached the bay and my aunt told my dad that all the toilets were overflowing. My dad went down to check and he soon realised that we were in some kind of an extreme low pressure system. As soon as he had that thought, it shook him to his bones and he bolted back on deck... and he had quite the sight to see. We were basically looking into the eye of the storm under full sail ☠️ it went from 15 knots to 50 in half a minute. My father immediately furled the genoa but the in-mast furling sail just couldn't furl under those forces. We were being dragged towards the center of the whorphole by our main sail. The mast and shrouds were shaking so insanely I can't even describe it with words. It literally sounded like the wind was screaming. I was 7 at the time and I was holding on to one of the backstays. While the mast was shaking that backstay hit me across the fingers to hard that I couldn't fold my fingers without pain for weeks after the incident. At that point Iskra (my sis) and I were sent below deck. One crew member was on the bow when the fiasco started, she was jumping through a hatch into the boat's galley. I don't know how but the wind apparently blew one of her shoes off, at least that's what I've been told later. Another crew member was vomiting at the time and was out of commission. At that point there were 4 knowledgeable people on deck left to wrestle with the main sail. We don't know how high the wind blew, we only know the final reading before the wind instruments were shaken to pieces. It was well into the 100 knots region ☠️☠️☠️ all of a sudden we hear a large cracking/explosion sound. I was below deck thinking the mast is coming down... it wasnt, the steel ring that holds the in-mast furling sail attached to the halyard had snapped. It's a steel ring about 2 inches in diameter, it looked like someone had cut it with an angle grinder. I still to this day don't understand why the only component that broke was the strongest one on the entire mechanism, but regardless, we now had a sail in the sea, trying to whap itself around our prop and an outhaul rope that the crew couldn't untalngle. I got shouted the words:" Lovro, we need a knife, NOW!!!" I handed them the knife and they managed to cut the outhaul in order to free the sail completely. They pulled it out of the sea and stored it in one of the boats bathrooms. We returned to Trogir and we had quite a sight to see. ACI marina Trogir has never looked more like a ship graveyard than on that particular day. Broken genoas, broken sails, biminis blown to pieces etc. Our charter manager was looking at us in disbelief when he saw that the main sail was missing. The main sail that we stored into the bathroom was still in tact. That was the 25th of august 2014. Just 3 weeks ago was the 10th anniversary of that storm and I gathered most of the crew from that fateful trip once again to kind of commemorate it and remember why we should fear even the most tame sea in the world. Some of the crew members that were with us that day have never again set foot on a boat again. Also a true testament to the build quality of Beneteau clipper series boats 👍 That mast was in 100 knots of wind and a full main sail unfurled and it didn't collapse
