Excuse my ignorance but what weight bullet works best and as it’s subsonic I guess recoil is little and you can see the bullet strike the animal through the scope ?

Not at all. You just have to use a bullet designed to expand at subsonic velocity, like those Lehigh Max Expansion.

Thanks for your armchair expertise in ballistics and hunting ethics. That deer mule kicked and then ran with its tail down indicating it was hit solidly in the vitals. It ran about two steps out of the video frame and fell over dead. Newsflash, you can shoot a deer through the vitals with a 300 Win Mag and sometimes they’ll run some distance before they expire.

@@jeffshannon8863 How many foot lbs of energy did the bullet impact with?
@jeffshannon8863
@jeffshannon8863 10 ай бұрын
@@roberthanna45 Kinetic energy doesn’t equate to lethality. Subsonic expanding bullets kill by rapid hemorrhaging similar to an expanding broadhead. An FMJ bullet of the same weight and velocity will have the same kinetic energy, but would have almost no lethality unless it struck the central nervous system.
@roberthanna45
@roberthanna45 10 ай бұрын
@@jeffshannon8863 Kinetic energy may not equate to lethality but it sure is correlated. A 30 caliber bullet and a broadhead are vastly different projectiles. You probably hit that deer with about 400 ft-lbs. A 22 LR would hit with about 1/4 of this energy and can also kill deer. You made more noise bleating at the deer than shooting it. I don't see why a supersonic round isn't a better choice other than you playing.
@jeffshannon8863
@jeffshannon8863 10 ай бұрын
@@roberthanna45 Your rationale about kinetic energy is antiquated and doesn’t hold up. By your rationale a non-expanding bullet that’s traveling faster would be more lethal, but it isn’t. My son and I have killed about ten deer now with that setup. One ran about 100 yards after a high lung shot. The rest went 30-50 yards and expired very quickly. All were heart/lung shots. I’ve recovered three of those Lehigh bullets and all were perfectly expanded. The rest were pass throughs that left large exit wounds similar to a large broadhead. I’d hardly call that playing. The whole point is to have an effective hunting rifle that is hearing safe and very comfortable for my kids to shoot out to 100 yards. If you consider that “questionably ethical” then I frankly don’t care about your ill informed opinion. www.ronspomeroutdoors.com/blog/killing-the-energy-killing-myth

Nice. How far did she run afterwards? I got a case of these Lehigh rounds myself, and while I love a suppressed .300blk I find it’s honestly far more affordable and effective to just shoot subsonic FMJ rounds at the skull. If you miss it’s almost always a clean miss, when you hit the skull they just fold right there. No tracking, and I hate tracking because without a decent blood trail and a dog when I take shots on the field edges no matter if they’re 20 or 200yds out they somehow find a way to make it to our thick Florida brush when I double lung em. Even though they don’t hear a shot they somehow when shot in the lungs go farther than I’d expect every time. More so than .300blk now I use my .308 and .457 CF Texan big bore air rifles on whitetail and its even far cheaper still per shot. You have to be confident in your shots and practice a decent but before hand to know you’ll hit a skull sized target over double lung sized. A still deer within around 100yds is in the danger zone an they don’t even know what’s gonna hit em. It’s nice to know exactly where they are and will stay after you pull the trigger. The .300blk is an awesome cartridge, I prefer it mostly as a pdw round for a short AR, I got a short REM 700 action “Pork Sword” in .300blk that’s super handy and effective in a stand. Since I’ve started varmint/deer depredation work on a farm the air rifles have by and far been the most cost effective and just plain effective tool in my Arsenal. When combined with a DonnyFL suppressor, a 4x-40 640 Th0r 4 thermal scope, and some cnc machined aluminum tipped 340gr lead rounds a .457 Texan CF is personally my favorite sub sonic way to drop a deer, with that setup you easily can even go past 100yds if you’re used to taking shots that far. With over twice the power compared to say a 9mm round at the muzzle the Texan is not messin around. It’ll have more energy than a subsonic .300blk does as well, and if you really love the Lehigh expanding rounds I know that a little bit ago guys were shooting .40-50cal Lehigh all copper rounds from the Texans and getting really good expansion and accuracy as well. God Speed this season and good luck 🤙

That deer went about two steps outside the video frame and went down. I’ve taken several deer with those bullets and they’ve either dropped in their tracks or run no more than 50 yards. I don’t care for head shots because a deer can move its head two feet in a split second and I’ve seen way too many deer with their jaws shot off from poor shots. More power to you if you have it mastered, but I prefer a heart/lung shot myself. Those Lehigh’s act like a broadhead when they open up and cause massive internal hemorrhaging. It’s a great round for kids to shoot suppressed due to the lack of noise and recoil, but of course it’s range limiting.
