А как ехать во время снегопада? Или там дворник с метлой ходить будет? 😂
@onaplaneagain5 күн бұрын
Good question! I’m not entirely sure - there is rarely any snow in this area. Maybe only one day a year but yes, I don’t know if that brings it to a complete standstill or not!!

The only reason why this system works is because not many people are using it. Imagine if there are hundreds of people waiting for a shuttle service, it will take a long time to clear the crowd. It makes more sense to install travellators or LRT than driverless pods.
@onaplaneagain9 күн бұрын
You’re absolutely right - it works in this case because it’s got very low demand and there’s never any queues of people.

Apparently the CM of Maharashtra announced at the beginning of last year that they would be starting a similar service in the BKC region of Mumbai - it will be interesting to see if they follow through on that.

@onaplaneagain The company I was working for at the time was doing the steelwork for the T5B building & was awarded this job as an extra. It was an interesting project, a little different from what we normally did. I remember thinking at the time (circa 2006), driverless vehicles were something out of science fiction. 🤣

San Jose (SJC) -- you know us as "Silicon Valley", part of the "San Francisco Bay Area" -- has a project that Glydways won, to deploy a similar system from SJC to San Jose Diridon Train Station. It's supposed to be a ten minute trip (driving is about 15-20 minutes). Airports in cities in the USA (west of the Mississippi at least) are much closer than in Europe; the distance from SJC to San Jose Diridon is about five miles or eight kilometers. 🙂 I personally think it's great, but there's some controversy; some members of the San Jose City Council don't want it. We'll see. 🙂 (currently, one takes a bus operated by a human for a short distance, and then gets on either light rail or Caltrain (the heavy rail train that goes from San Jose to San Francisco) to get to San Jose Diridon. The light rail way is cheaper but takes 45 minutes, and the Caltrain way takes 30 minutes. Glydways would be faster than either of those. 🙂)

Interesting! Good luck with that - hope they manage to get it over the line and constructed!

Out of interest, once you disembark from the pod are the lifts the only way of getting into the terminal or are there escalators/stairs too?
@onaplaneagain21 күн бұрын
There are lifts and stairs to get out of the building that the pod arrives at and then all three once you’re in the terminal.

The pod service should be extended between the terminals too so that people don't depend on the Piccadilly line or the Elizabeth line as much
