Hey! It was most definitely running on steam. The Diesel locomotive is there in case they have problems with Big Boy. I got to speak with the crew, it was pretty cool. The steam power plany was converted from coal to fuel oil. much more efficent and clean.

It really is a pretty impressive sight. If you get a chance, talk to some of the crew. They can give you some really cool additional info. For instance, one of the cars is a metal fabrication shop. If a custom made part breaks they can replicate it on the spot.

It's just a piece of living history! They are not being used all over the place. There has to be a balance. This train was built before computers, CAD (computer aided design) using old fashioned methods, like a slide rule. It gives people perspective.
