I feel like the issue with Mordred was that Merlin relied too heavily on the could-be, so that Mordred one day may be the one to kill Arthur. It's basically a self-fulfilling prophecy at that point

What I remember is that Arthur heard somebody walking behind him. We can say that he was attacked from behind by Mordred who was just a coward. Merlin's knew Arthur would die at Mordred's hand and did nothing to protect him or he could not as Mordred became Arthur's favorite knight. What a mess.
