I am currently using a black edition DCX Bass in EQ mode as a tone shaper with my Darkglass Alpha Omega Photon. Now, I'm just waiting for my OE Bass Rig 64 Black to arrive to add to my minimalist fly rig. I plan to place the Bass Rig at the end of the chain (EBMM Stingray 4 > DCX Bass > DG Alpha Omega Photon > 64 Black). I intend to use the DCX Bass as a boost or for my clean tone, and have my Darkglass drive the Bass Rig. Considering that they are all preamps, would it be too much to have three preamps on one board? If you can please create a content stacking pre amps like origin with darkglass would be killer.

I like the DiMarzio the best. Thanks

I'm probably biased having played them, but the DP122 just has what the other two have combined and more of it. The wiry, snotty thing on top, yet has the depth as well.

They all sound great! I believe based on this I would just keep my Fender pickup and save a bunch of money!
@iamgribs Жыл бұрын
Wow! You play great. Model P really fat and punchy. NP4 also, but highs are more recessed and more bass. Fender well sounds, brighter and more nasal. They all sound good, depends what you are after

I came for the comparison, stayed for the music! I liked Nordstrand the most

Thanx for the comparison, Allan. Great idea, to present the PUs in various mixes, so you can really hear, how they sit in the mix against the other instruments. Very helpful for me, as I have an LB-100 exactly like yours. Fantastic bass, if you're looking for a slightly more modern 'P-bass on steroids' type of sound. The stock G&L PU is quite hot and aggressive sounding, similar to an SD quarter pound, I'd say. Perfect for cutting through against heavily distorted guitars. Lots of punch and grind. Just a little bit too aggressive in the mids for my taste, especially as the LB-100 is my working horse bass for my blues-/classic rock band. I think the smoother, less mid heavy sound of the Nordstrand PU will suit my needs best to tame that beast a little bit. I also have Nordstrand Vintage 60s PUs in my Jazz Bass and they do a great job there, too.

Technically not Fender pickup...G&L....very little difference but not the exact same, pretty good but not their best, (G&L1000 is a fantastic bass humbucker) created by Leo & George at G&L...i thought the Fender was the best in this mix, just my opinion....i have Nordstrand diaganol pole pieced pickups in my Ibanez E600, very good pickups....never been a Dimarzio fan for some reason...but these are not bad sounding, very clear...i like them...

a p bass with the dimarzio is the way a p bass should sound the dimarzio brings the bass to life cuts thru the mix doesnt lose the e string and has the growl when sliding or digging in .i like the dimarzio best

Is that a recent LB100? Not the early 90s version?. If it is, I'm very interested to hear how these pickups compare to the stock alnico 5 pickup from G&L.

Interesting. They all have their moments when they sound best. I like the way the Fender always cuts through with the high end, but it gets a little messy on the busier passages. It has the least low end, but that doesn't really concern me. It's got enough. The NP4 usually has the cleanest attack, although sometimes it'd sound better with just a bit more growl or upper mid. The slightly scooped tone keeps the low notes from thundering as they could. The Model P has that really strong mid emphasis. It sounds especially good on the higher-register rock stuff.

I have been very surprised by how well the Nordtrand sits in the mix compare to my personal experience with the model I have and it is not the NP4 but the NP4V which is not has loud as the NP4.

Excellent comparison. Alone you can hear the differences. Once the band starts playing, they all sound alike. Wow.

Dimarzio for the win (in my opinion)

The G&L has the barky mid range positions at just the right frequency to stake its spot in the mix better than the other 2 pickups. You can hear a slight drop off in the cut thru when going from the G&L to the Nordy.

Model P and NP4 both obviously hotter and better balanced than stock, NP4 a bit more bassy than Model P. Really useful video, thanks!

Thanks - a great help as I'm trying to decide on pickup replacement. Funnily enough, in this comparison, the Fender seemed to lack body - a bit too much middle for my liking. I know you can eq this out but I thought the Nordy was preferable while the DiMarzio seemed to have somewhat more 'grunt'. Great demo though!

Thanks. Yea the Fender sounds thin compared to the Model P and the Nordrand which both have a huge, but focused bottom end. It used to live in a bass that had an unruly, boomy, low end and it cleaned that right up. Ended up sounding focused and growly, it has this really cool high-mid grit to it. The Dimarzio is still in the G&L, really like it's grunty thud like tone in the low mids and has really present high mids that don't really get harsh. The only down side is that it can sound quite brittle when using dirt pedals, I've always had an easier time with the Nordstrand and dirt pedals. Although, a tiny bit of overdrive and playing with a pick works really well on the Dimarzio.

The Nordstrand seems to have more bottom end, but not in a muddy way. Love the G&L P-Pickup. I've done some demos of G&L basses and they're killer

Came here to hear the Model P perform and wasn’t disappointed. Definitely getting a set. The Nordstrand NP4 sits very nicely in the mix, though. The Fender is too ‘quacky’ or Jazz Bass-like.
