When explaining things in English, a first language speaker is a good idea. The french accent is particularly strong here and coupled with the overly loud music makes this unwatchable.

Hi, is it necessary to have GTIN for all different products of the same clothing brand? Such as, do I need different GTIN for all items, colors and sizes? I am trying to introduce a brand that primarily has a few products in different colors and sizes and the number of GTIN is becoming a lot according to the variation. What is the solution for me? How can I reduce the expense here?

As my Dad was an Engineer at MSI back in 70-71 who helped design UPC and it was in the beginning it was made for inventories(Alpha Beta Supermarkets) and he helped with magnetic stripes development which originally was made for security locks which turned into mag stripes on CC's.....

by choosing this complicated way of introducing us to this topic you just became the most hated man on the planet today... this topic and introduction for the average small startup seller is just a nightmare. You have not even considered that thousands of non IT small producers may watch it and try to understand this new topic. Completely not acceptable ...shame ! Overall, this just shows in what direction we are all heading ... complete nightmare & dystopia

This is an unfair statement. This video is about as simple of an introduction to the GS1 digital link that one could humanly do and Phil nailed it. It's now 3 years old and still super relevant, accurate and fun to watch.

I agree witht the dystopia.. but I think the GS1 and brands exagerate the amount of consumers that will run around with phones scanning QR codes for recipes and extra information. Knowing how much data that certainly WILL be stored about you, no need to create more. But in the end, I don't think it's avoidable. Buy item X and pay with scan/go or your digital wallet.. now the credit card providers and store will know exactly which item you bought when. They know if you prefer near expired items cheaper or fresher items. They know which colour variant you choose, if you react to promotional displays etc etc. And randomly you start getting ads on facebook for same brand. It's all a matter of data capture. All linked to combination of GTIN + unique numbers. And I guarantee, that road will never stop.

Nice explanation, Phil! I still had to cringe a little at your httpRange-14 explanation. Old wounds. Also, as a geek, I want to know exactly what about the URL signals to the scanner it's got a GTIN. But not enough to look it up 🙂

Scanners will ignore the fact it's a URL - it's just a syntax for the identifiers which are independent of the internet domain name. So we have put in mitigations against breaking a server's sovereignty over its URI space.

@@sandhawke yes, but it's horrendous. Scanners have context if the store as starting point. Start from right hand side if path, go back 2 path segments, if it's a recognised GS1 'application identifer' (a numeric parameter) then the thing you skipped over is its value.

@@1philarcher okay makes reasonable engineering sense. The potential for misreading that is significant, though. Everyone putting QR codes where they might be price scanned needs to know this.

Like, it's not just use this syntax and get cool features. It's also Beware! Accidentally use this syntax and your item will scan as something else. I suppose the gtin-in-stock space is sparse enough that's statistically unlikely.
